AFAIK this equation is the essence of Calvinism (you can see if you are chosen, when you are able to be rich), which is not worshipping money but a Christian god. And that belief is a major influence on protestant and evangelical church.
Max Weber described this belief as being a major success factor for early stage capitalism in the beginning of the industrialization.

I think that's a misrepresentation. Hard work is valued in Calvinism, and wealth can be a blessing, but seeing wealth as a sign of salvation is far too contrary to the words of Jesus to still be Christian.
