This is the legacy of Lutheranism in the US. It is in line with the doctrine that if you are ‘Godly’ and deserving of God’s favor you will be showered with money, power, and possessions. By extension, if you don’t have these things it is because you’ve somehow been evil and not deserving of God’s favor. Heaven help you if you are doubly cursed with being poor and female.

@mildpeach @MostlyHarmless That sounds pretty awful. It also somewhat reminds me of the Mandate of Heaven; that the right to rule the universe (i.e. all of China) is bestowed upon just and righteous emperors during times of peace and prosperity, but revoked by natural disasters or successful rebellions.
