Hey fyi

You can go to radiooooo.com (that's 5 o's), look at the world map, select a country, select a decade, and then listen to music from that time and place. For free. No ads. No idea how or why but it exists. Check it out!

Edit: you should also know that radio.garden gives access to currently airing radio stations. I am not familiar, but several people have endorsed it. Nice to have options!

Last edit, promise.

P.S. Hearthis.at and Mixcloud.com if you're interested in following DJs & listening to their mixes. Both pros and amateurs.

It also has settings for "slow," "fast," and "weird" songs.

This is how I discovered the utterly amazing (and ultimately tragic) Cambodian rock & roll scene of the 1960s.

Oh and there's a "Jin Jiyan Azadi" station featured: "Past and Present Sounds of the Iranian Revolution."

Right now I'm listening to the sounds of Mali in the 1970s and it's soooooo good. #music #70s #Mali #radio #Radiooooo

@Cyrus I'm just so glad it's still around. I discovered it 2 - 3 years ago and I hadn't thought about it in a while. I hope more people using it will help it continue!

@SallyStrange @Cyrus Same here! I saw this and thought “Wow, I haven’t thought about that site in a really long time.”

Possumantha

@SallyStrange Sahara blues would probably be up your alley.

@SallyStrange
So much great music comes from that place.
@maru_1

JustAFrog

@SallyStrange African funk is definitely great stuff.

Criminally underappreciated.

@SallyStrange
Thank you so much for both links!

Also, you reminded me of the existence of Zamrock (-:

@SallyStrange oh hey check out Cambodian Space Project for a modern revival of 60s cambodian rock!

Sally Strange

@jepyang They're fantastic. What artists; what a beautiful tribute.

Sunanda

@SallyStrange thanks for sharing, this is so cool!

@ruemaleficent Isn't it great? I played it once for my spouse's mom, who's Jamaican, and grew up in the 60s, and she heard "The Independence Calypso," a song celebrating Jamaica's independence, from 1962, for the first time since the 1960s. It was delightful.

Uzi Bobuzi

@SallyStrange It's *amazing.* My son and I both immediately bookmarked it and I went around the world in a time machine.

@SallyStrange
hey this is really cool!
Also, LOVED this tribute :)

Sally Strange

@alavi Yes! I listened to that station for a bit. Wonderful stuff.

@SallyStrange
Iran has a truly majestic music culture (not much nowadays, like the rest of the world)

Sally Strange

@alavi I have been exposed to Iranian music from time to time. I was lucky enough to see a famous Persian musician (I think, singer and drummer by specialty) and his ensemble perform in Burlington, VT, once, and it's one of the few performances that have moved me to tears. I cannot recall his name right now, to my annoyance. (I remember there were lots of E's in his name.) I have also heard that Iranian cuisine is among the best in the world. Then there's the poetry. If I could travel anywhere in the world, Iran would be next on my list. Really wish our shitty respective governments would just disappear sometimes.

@SallyStrange Love this one and also Radio Garden, which lets you play live radio from all over the world:

@SallyStrange Omfg!! I knew of radio.garden/ but this.. this takes you to the past!! Amazing find :D

@SallyStrange
Woo... dialed into South Africa for some great kwaito music
Thanks

@SallyStrange omg that is brilliant. I’m an old GIS guy so I love that it has a magical mappy UI with geographic and time selection. I’m listening to 1955 Indochina and loving the swoopy lap steel guitars combined with the traditional string instruments. The harmonic style is cheerful but the radically different intonation makes it slightly eerie.

Sally Strange

@weldon Yeah, they have an app, but using it through a browser also works fine. Desktop or mobile (I have android phone). radiooooo.com/

Sally Strange

@burnoutqueen (it has both Israel and Palestine, to be clear)

Sally Strange

@burnoutqueen I was surprised. USA brainwashing at work, I suppose.

Jackie (aka Queen Antifa) 🌹:debian_logo::linux:

@SallyStrange Israel exists. I just think the idea of an ethnostate is problematic. I don't even care if it's still called Israel. I just think anti Palestinian racism and settler colonialism should end.

Sally Strange

@burnoutqueen agreed. Problematic is an understatement. I meant I was surprised to see Palestine recognized at all.

Sally Strange

@burnoutqueen Further update: Sadly, one cannot listen to music from Palestine. A few countries are marked on the map, but don't have a music stream available. Palestine and Jordan, Chad, and a few others.

Thanks for asking.

Jay

@SallyStrange Lol love the name; did the creators own any racehorses, by chance?

Great resource! I keep meaning to expand my music choices.

If sometimes music is too much but you need something in your ears, I like ambient-mixer.com - you can build “atmospheres” using sounds and hear what other people have uploaded (and yes, there are cat purring noises!).

Jean-Francois Mezei

@SallyStrange The map for Canada is strange. It does not differentiate between English Canada and Québec which have totally different music. But has a wedge which includes a small part of Québec south of St-Lawrence river , New Brunswick and Nova Scotia that light up independantly of rest of Canada but point to "Canada" in terms of music.

Curious how the playlists for each country/decatde is built, But amazing service.

Sally Strange

@jfmezei mwais, on est des grands fans de la musique Québecoise chez moi (enfin chez mes parents). I hadn't checked out the Canada station. It seems to me like there's a lot of volunteer work involved

@SallyStrange
radio.garden does not do "time travel", only allows web access to current airing radio stations. But it is quite great to use, although I recently chose to switch to the #FOSS alternative "Transistor".

@SallyStrange I gotta try this, but I have the feeling it'll make me cry tears of second-hand nostalgia and the terror of time passing.

Pat Madigan 🇺🇸 🌊

@SallyStrange I just loaded Radiooooo using their excellent iPad app, and randomly selected a country and decade, Turkey 1980 in this case. I am loving this, thanks!

And yes, Radio Garden is also quite good in a different way, as it’s (sometimes, not always) using actual radio stations.

DELETED

@SallyStrange The first one you mention is interesting. I've bookmarked it to check out later.
I looked at radio.garden too. It's okay, I guess,

Tina 💙🎶🌻

@SallyStrange This is very interesting! (I had never heard of the US songs, though, which is a little odd and makes me wonder about the selection.)

southie wusky

@SallyStrange mixcloud is so ruined for me after they put a (VERY) small cap on how many shows you can post without paying premium, which is absolutely not cheap. it is specifically meant for DJs who mix for profit and nobody else, it feels like

cameronbosch :endeavourOS:

@SallyStrange House Mixes is another great site for electronic music dj mixes: house-mixes.com

JennieMacfie Queen of Teacups

@SallyStrange Thank you for that - not only is radiooooo.com great, unlike current internet radio stations specialising in the tunes of a particular decade, it plays all kinds of tracks, not just chart hits - brilliant stuff.
