OpenStreetMap is a map that everyone can edit and improve, and that's how we've created the best map of the world. 😍 🗺 💪 🥇

Alas, some people just want to vandalise things 😭. If you've seen weird things on the map (e.g. lots of crossing white lines), that could be vandalism. Here's what to do if you see this:

@openstreetmap @SomeoneElse thanks, I've encountered this once before and been very confused as to what to do about it.

Now, for next time, I know what to do.

Luckily it was solved very quickly last time :)

@openstreetmap @SomeoneElse Solche weißen Linien habe ich gesehen und konnte mir nicht erklären, was es damit auf sich hat. Werde ab jetzt drauf achten

@pete @openstreetmap @SomeoneElse No need for #AI here: Lots of changes and/or lots of conflicts should just be reason to flag for review. Simple counters may be more than sufficient.

I bet there's some low hanging fruit for automation though.

@pete @openstreetmap @SomeoneElse Yes, e.g. counting, measuring distances, …. From the article, I got the impression that some of this is already flagged for review.

Surprised there aren't reliable filters/flags for vandalism. You need good bots to have a chance against bad bots.

Can vandalize data end up in map downloads? Could you post something to this? THX!

@openstreetmap @SomeoneElse careful - the gerrymandering ' data whores of the conservatives like that too.. they wanna use the data to make their own software to track fleets etc.. food biz. what? FL"
shady but legit.
fash and that's it.

@enkiusz @openstreetmap @SomeoneElse the world is a big place. Even if a review queue is set up for everyone to check charges, there's no guarantee the reviewers will know what's real or not in most cases, if they aren't local to the area. Plus, it could stifle the rollout of many desirable edits, from where I see it. Do you have any ideas in mind on how to tackle the issue without causing more issues / friction?

@openstreetmap @SomeoneElse

It is NOT the best map in the world
or at least, not always
eg, if you look at the north side of Beacon street near washington square, brookline MA, google has a lot more info; OSM lacks a lot of info
no contest

@failedLyndonLaRouchite we're not perfect. If there is stuff missing from OSM you can edit it! Why not try to improve that street in OSM?

@amapanda

off topic, IMO

the point is that the OP said it is " best map of the world."

well that phrase isn't quite idiomatic, the example I provided shows that in fact OSM is not always the best map

nothing I said had anything to do with perfection

@openstreetmap a simple filter that checks if the distance between a changed node to it's neighbours has increased dramatically should help with one type of vandalism
