Balkans had “vowed virgins” tradition. A girl could take a vow of celibacy before the elders and start living in society as a man (wearing men's clothes, doing traditionally male things, voting, inheriting property).
It was done by the daughters of families who were left without a man. Or a girl could avoid being married off by changing her social role.
