@tchambers I feel like more and more people are finally, slowly starting to "get it" that ActivityPub federation is something much bigger than an x-twitter alternative. It is a way of restoring and strengthening the interconnections of the Web which have come perilously close to dying completely.
Simultaneously I have more impatience and frustration and suspicion with #Meta and #Threads as time passes. Zuck, He of "move fast and break things" and "beg forgiveness instead of ask permission", is curiously super cautious and slow and opt-in about the whole thing, and the piecemeal rollout of unidirectional federation seems VERY telling. I really think they are trying to figure out how to minimize migration and maximize monetization before they truly federate.
Outbound-only federation is USELESS to people like me who are trying to build online communities, not just "follow our friends over there"...
@tchambers ...I am eagerly awaiting the day when our Community Association can kick the community Facebook pages to the kerb and replace them with a federated forum/BBS of OUR choosing that could actually have some traction...where all those existing 3000 to 4000 FB page members could just...do nothing and continue to participate in our very own Community BBS with their Meta logins! Those who pay dues could even migrate from there to local accounts for the full experience!
But...no...*WE* must follow *THEM* Our interactions just disappear into the fedi-aether. We can look but cannot touch. This one-way flow of info from Big Silo Social to ragtag fedi is of such limited use for such a big burden it is no wonder so many instances proactively fediblocked them.
