Every automatic door I saw has one or more notes: please do not try to open, it’s automatic! Which means “bad design” — good design doesn’t need explanation.

But why is it bad? I have meditated on it a bit and concluded that it’s bad because door handles are still there. Remove them and you won’t need any notes.

Handle is there in case Tür ist kaputt after someone ignored the instructions

@nikitonsky if a new edition of The Design of Everyday Things is printed, this exact example should be included in the discussion of door handles and affordances

@nikitonsky for every automatic door automation can be disabled at least for maintenance and there you need a handle

Niki Tonsky

@chipollino then it should be hidden maintenance handle!

Tom Nijhof-Verhees

@nikitonsky the handle is a safety feature for of the door breaks or electric is gone. So removing it will not be enough

Maybe if you make it handle you can push in or put it very low so you force of habit does not kick in

Kirill Chernyshov

@nikitonsky no, removing the handle can't prevent people from forcing the door by pushing. What is really missing in most automatic doors is a clutch to disengage the support when a certain amount of force is applied.
