I’ve finally started to consider an off-site backup location. I don’t have enough data to justify building a server to put in my parents' house (yet), so cloud it is.

So far, I’m leaning towards #Backblaze B2. Do you have anything good (or bad) to say about it, or can recommend other services to check out?

I want: one (EU-based) location, no (or small) egress fees, pricing per GB (or less), no minimum charge. I use #restic, so backend doesn’t matter (S3, FTP, DAV, you name it).

@kytta consider the transfer costs. Last time I checked *data storage* costs were small at B2, but *data transfer* costs were substantial.

In a situation where something goes wrong and you need to rely on these backups, that amounts to highway robbery. And you pretty much have no choice but to pay at that point.

@rysiek they have a free allowance of 3x the stored data, and $10/TB after that. I find that pricing quite fair; definitely better than some other cloud providers

@kytta ah, then things have changed substantially. Good to know!

@kytta I’ve been using Backblaze for personal backup since like 2012 or something, and B2 since a few months after launch (including running a fairly high volume media streaming company that was a client of mine off it for their archive video hot storage for years). Overall great. Can’t complain about price. Pretty good support. Occasional issues with routes / network resilience in some areas but that’s not much concern for backup use cases.

@kytta borgbase have restic support and a 10gb free tier. I find them pretty good.

@josephb wow, didn't know that they support restic! I love the service, but with the EU VAT, it's more expensive than Backblaze or Hetzner. And my data amount will most likely land in the middle of their 250 GB / 1 TB split 😁

JB

@kytta Ahh yeah ok, that would make them more expensive than Backblaze B2.

I haven’t had issues using B2 with restic, but I do have a smaller dataset.

@kytta I use Infomaniak as a target for my Restic backups.
It’s a swiss based company.

@kytta #wasabi is a likely candidate for us, when we launch.
