Stop listing VNC servers and clients as TeamViewer alternatives, THEY ARE NOT.

@drq I agree, it's so annoying! but... is it actually not?

Dr. Quadragon ❌

@straw No. VNC requires direct network access. If you are on the other side of the globe and the user on that machine is not very computer-literate, good luck getting to that point.

TeamViewer and Anydesk are zero-configuration, pretty much. They basically require only running an app and passing a string of numbers to operate.

@drq oh yeah, maybe someone should make a VNC-based thing that is easy to set up... but VNC does serve the same function once set up right?

@straw Getting an image and listening for input events is not hard. "Setting up" is the key part. It makes a world of difference.

@drq so, do we have any open source alternatives?

Dr. Quadragon ❌

@Evv1L If we had, I'd like to know what it is, because I want it.

Evv1L (Эвил)

@drq we have RustDesk but you need selfhost this

@Evv1L RustDesk is _almost_ what I want. Get it to handshake without an intermediate server over p2p (like Tox) - and I'm sold.

Yes, the string of characters will be longer, but I won't have to explain to the customer what a "RustDesk server" is.

Konflicker

@drq actually, if you mix something like yggdrasil and vnc...

Dr. Quadragon ❌

@konflicker ... for which to work you still have to find a peer...
