@FediTips How would one connect a C64 to the internet?

Fedi.Tips

@BritishTechGuru

There are some instructions for connecting the C64 to the internet at the bottom of the C64 app's github page:

github.com/Havoc6502/MOStodon

@FediTips Now that's interesting. Given the C64 is very basic, I wonder whether the modem would have to be an acoustic coupler.

I wonder whether a Vic-20 could be used with Mastodon. That would be interesting.

I am not an expert in any way and do not own a C64, but think the github instructions are referring to modern devices like this?

@FediTips now Iโ€™m tempted to go get my old computers working again. Before the only reason was the frustrating joy to work on projects on floppy disks.

This is very cool. I dont need to understand the magic to appreciate it. Now we need "mastodon for dummies" like me.

@BlackDogActual

Understood, I do try to normally post tips with a wider audience, but occasionally these niche info posts are popular too ๐Ÿ˜€

By the way, there actually IS a "Mastodon for Dummies" book from the actual "...for Dummies" company:

โ€œMastodon For Dummiesโ€ by Chris Minnick and Mike McCallister (ISBN: 978-1-394-19336-3), available from bookshops and libraries. Itโ€™s also available as an e-book from services like Kobo or Kindle, and as an audiobook from all major audiobook platforms.

@FediTips
Thank you so much. I will pick it up at the book store.

@FediTips I LOVE the idea of running Mastodon on DOS and God Help Me.

stevenray

Hey @FediTips what about on Raspberry Pi? I got one o' those laying around somewhere. Fewer headaches than a late 90s PC. ๐Ÿ™‚ I don't mean emulating DOS, I just mean natively.

Fedi.Tips

@stevenray

If you're running Linux on the Pi, you might be able to use some desktop apps like Sengi?

But generally a modern desktop machine like the Pi would probably work best just using your server's website. ๐Ÿ™‚

stevenray

@FediTips ah, ok. That's me, trying to make things more complicated . ๐Ÿ˜€

Fedi.Tips

@stevenray

I guess that's part of the fun of a Pi! ๐Ÿ˜

If you did want to emulate a system on it, I'm sure there must be a way to get one of these retro apps working on it too.

stevenray

@FediTips yup. That was something I used to be up for in years past. At this point in life, I think I'll opt for an easier solution. Thanks lots for the info!!

@FediTips If only those old computers/OS would support tls1.3...

@FediTips Wow. Palm OS. That takes me back. I remember being excited when I bought a Palm Pilot to use as my planner and note pad in my early years of high school (maybe late middle school?).

@steezy

The picture in the link is an old Apple computer from the 1980s running a special app that lets it connect to Mastodon.

All the links in this post are for these special apps that let old computers connect to Mastodon.

If only people had written servers back then, too, we could've had a fediverse ecosystem 40 years ago! ๐Ÿ˜†

@MegaMichelle

Weirdly, they had something very similar called BBSes, which were a lot like Fediverse servers and mostly run by volunteers. You would phone up a BBS on your computer's modem, and it would let you post messages and download files. The different BBSes would also exchange messages, so that people on different BBSes could stay in touch.

For anyone reading this and interested in this topic, there's a documentary series about them on PeerTube at:
