@NanoRaptor you missed the opportunity to “tobleronerize” it 😉

@NanoRaptor I need to get some metalworking tools and make this real

Matthew Miller

@NanoRaptor

If it were equilateral (and could be plugged in any way), and maybe a bit smaller, I actually wouldn't hate this!

Dave Disser

@NanoRaptor does this work in any orientation or does it take six attempts to insert?

Bornach

@colinstu @disser @NanoRaptor
That's how you know it's fake. The USB committee would not have centered the solid bit in the middle of the equilateral triangle so that only 1 out of 6 orientations actually fits

Edit: just checked Alt text. Well played!

Mycroft

@disser @NanoRaptor I came in to ask if it took six attempts or nine

Linh Pham

@NanoRaptor From Pitchfork of Knowledge to A Piece of the Triforce of Knowledge 😅

RElHR0VS

@shadowlab @NanoRaptor Or maintaining the current USB naming convention, this could be:

USB 5.2 Gen 8 3x3 (Type-D) TriSuperSpeed

BobHy

@NanoRaptor wait, is that an Escher triangle? Almost looks impossible...

Paul McGrane

@NanoRaptor It's about as thick as RJ-45 so that will be a fat ass on the iPad!

Alex Padilla

@NanoRaptor the tri-symmetry is bad enough, but that USB3 symbol is truly cursed

ROTOPE~1 :yell:

@alexpadilla @NanoRaptor what do you have against the "Universal Spanning Bus" logo?

David H. McCoy

@NanoRaptor

At last.

Perfect for the new M4 iPad Pro.

James Henstridge

@NanoRaptor Looks too symmetrical. The central core should be offset slightly so only one of the three orientations can successfully be plugged in.

Bornach

@jbaggs @jamesh @NanoRaptor
Wonder how to make it so that the apparently triangular plug actually has 6 orientations in much the same way that rectangular USB plugs paradoxically have 3?
That frustratingly familiar "quantum" property of the interface standard

ROTOPE~1 :yell:

@NanoRaptor I love that little bit of filth where the socket contacts have had to ramp up on the center post

Internet Hedgehog

@NanoRaptor this has terrifying implications for USB1

Huw!

@NanoRaptor I still manage to plug it in upside down

Tevruden Dawnspear

@NanoRaptor if USB-A exists in four dimensions, how many extra dimensions does this exist in? (how many times am I gonna have to rotate it to plug it in?)

Jay

@NanoRaptor Pictured: data going straight into the 🔺USB and emerging gay.

Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” album art: a triangle with white lines, denoting a prism, set against a black backdrop with a white line entering the prism from the left and a rainbow beam emerging from the prism on the right.
JulianCalaby

@NanoRaptor The worst part about this is that it actually has the correct number of pins for a "traditional" USB 3 connector.

Kroc Camen

@NanoRaptor It’s actually perfectly square but since it’s a 4-Dimensional object we only see a 3-sided slice. Unfortunately for us, it’s always the wrong 3-sided slice

Eugene Glover

@NanoRaptor Please tell me it’s keyed so it only goes in one way. We needed a plug that you have to try 5 times before it goes in.

Tobias

@NanoRaptor Thes spiderweb of a logo is a nice touch

:evdonia_corner_emblem: Melanie Bjornsdottir (she)

@NanoRaptor I bet the scalenity is to key, so it doesn’t get inserted the wrong way up, yes?

elrido
@NanoRaptor I guess around USB 65535 we will have approximated a circular barrel jack enough, that they will actually fit the socket on first try.
Alien software, human hardware

@NanoRaptor they should have home with this design.
Then you would not feel so bad if the thing goes in after you turn it around for the second time.

Spring Breakdown :jo:

@NanoRaptor And I would still end up trying to jam it in slightly askew. :blobugh:

myrmepropagandist

@NanoRaptor

EW can you imagine the footprint of this beast on your PCB? Mad that you have to make space for a headphone jack on your board in Eagle? Look at this and weep. Might as well just go home and not make a gadget at all.

JustAFrog

@futurebird @NanoRaptor I'm sure there's a mini version of it, just like with USB 2.

myrmepropagandist

@justafrog @NanoRaptor

I know this is just a fun Dana post... but the thought of a whole other family of new USB connectors makes me want to cry.

JustAFrog

@futurebird @NanoRaptor "Give me the USB cable!"

"... which one?"

"The one with the ... oh shit, let me show you a pic."

"And what plug on the other end?"

"Ah, uh, hm, hang on..."

myrmepropagandist

@justafrog @NanoRaptor

USB T (for triangle)
USB T mini
USB T micro
USB T C
nooooooo

tsia

@NanoRaptor do I have to flip it 4 or 6 times to be able to plug it in?

Artificial Stupidity

@NanoRaptor pretty sure you gonna have to plug it trice before you plugged it correct way
