Fedi.Tips 🎄

Substitoot is a free open source add-on for web browsers which automatically fetches complete Mastodon threads from the original server. This is useful if you think some replies are missing due to federation issues.

➡️ Substitoot for Firefox (also works on Firefox for Android): addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firef

➡️ Substitoot for Chrome: chromewebstore.google.com/deta

➡️ Substitoot's source code: github.com/virtulis/substitoot

Would be nice to know people's opinions and experiences about this add-on 🤔

@FediTips @manu Will the best Android client (@moshidon) or the best PWA client (@elk) plan to have something like that?

🍞🐱

@FediTips Idk about this extension (that I'll try right away), but it make me think about @phanpy that have a very similar feature and it's quite useful actually

Octavia con Amore

@breadly @FediTips @phanpy wait, phanpy has that feature? I use phanpy as my main fedi interface for my PC, but I had no clue :zerotwo_laugh:

🍞🐱

@OctaviaConAmore @FediTips @phanpy Yeah, It's not in the options but it's right there, when you open any remote post :blob_cat:

Screenshot of a opened tab de Phanpy showing an opened post and the good option to see the same post but from the point of view of the remote instance

@breadly @FediTips @phanpy ooooooh, that button! I'd gone blind to it after using it a few times a few months ago :blobfox_sweat: thanks for reminding me~ :espeon_love:

@FediTips @manu i am curious if it is intended to override protections enacted against abusive / negligent servers? Or to make it easier for Facebook or Twitter corps to inundate us all with their spam and scams and ads?

DELETED

@whatzaname @FediTips Basically, it's just using the search engine of your instance to import missing replies (from ones that no one from your instance follows).
The moderation of your instance still applies.

@manu @FediTips ooh, thank you. Then, yup. It would make following interesting conversations so much easier!

@manu @whatzaname

Yeah, it's just intended to fill in posts missing from threads which aren't visible from your server yet.

Usually this isn't because of any blocks but simply because your server hasn't noticed their account yet. More info at:

morph

@FediTips It works great for me with Firefox on desktop. It also works with android mobile Firefox. Which installed as PWA is really an option.

mirabilos

@manu @FediTips ah ok, probably should be mentioned.

(I can’t personally imagine ever using that though…)

Shanie

@mirabilos :blobCat_shrug: Thanks for explaining your definition of “client” so someone could help.

mirabilos

@shanie it’s not "my" definition. Client is well-defined, in this context it’s client for mstdn-compatible c2s API.

Which, in the context of a webbrowser (which is merely an HTTP client), would be a client-side application running in the webbrowser. There’s more than one, you know.

Shanie

@mirabilos So, like, are you asking what browsers this supports? And does the OP not answer what browsers this is an extension for or something? You’re wording is in a way which is making this way too difficult to answer.

mirabilos

@shanie no, which clients, not which browsers, because I use Semaphore as client

Shanie

@mirabilos "Only Mastodon is supported as the home instance." via the GitHub.

As far as where it can fetch from, "It can fetch statuses and contexts from Akkoma/Pleroma and most Misskey/FireFish/Sharkey/IceShrimp/etc instances, better compatibility is a work in progress."

mirabilos

@shanie neither of these is an answer to my question. sigh…

Shanie

@mirabilos sounds like you’ll just have to try it. :catto_blush:

Sally Strange

@FediTips @manu I'm gonna try the firefox extension tomorrow

Draconic NEO

@FediTips @manu
This is a really good extension but I would be concerned about using it on very small instances as it could cause a lot of data to appear in the instance. It's probably fine since most data is text and text is relatively small, but still...

Shanie

@FediTips @manu I've used this add-on for a long time and it's a REQUIREMENT for Mastodon on the web, full stop. Without it, you will never have the full context of a conversation as a small instance user.

Again, a REQUIREMENT. ⚠️

Would be nice to know people's opinions

Well, would be nice if it worked for more software than only Mastodon.

Voxel (old account)

@FediTips I've been using this extension for quite some time and it has functioned flawlessly so far. The UI is basic (no affect on it's effectiveness) and I've found no bugs in its functionality. It's quite nice, with the exception of the fact that it transmit your IP address and possibly other information to the instance of the poster.

@FediTips i've been using this since i saw this toot and it works great!

«however», it seems to basically disable user blocking. looking at the notes, this is a known issue. i was very confused that i was seeing multiple accounts i thought i'd blocked some time ago in replies and shrugged it off until I thought of disabling the extension and saw a return to expected behavior.

this makes it unusable for me and, i suspect, others.

once this is fixed, i'd love to reinstall the extension as well as fund it. this fixes many of the significant problems with the fedi.

thank you Fedi.Tips for mentioning it and the dev for making it, even if it never gets any further development, i really enjoyed my time with it.

@dko

Ahh... that's quite a large problem indeed. Thank you for bringing this up, hopefully the developer fixes it!

By the way, just to be clear, I didn't make this, I was just passing on info about it.

Dan

@FediTips Yup, I gotcha! I'll make the post clearer.
