@RadicalEdward what worries me with Meta particularly is the Microsoft style 'embrace, extend, extinguish'. You can guarantee that with enough time they'll find a way to take over. The protocol will evolve according to their requirements and developers will be bought out.

@helgztech@fosstodon.org @RadicalEdward@hackers.town I think ActivityPub is an antiquated spec already. It should be encrypted by default, among other design decisions that make privacy not a thing.

We need something better now.

@nigel @helgztech @RadicalEdward agreed, the lack of encryption, or a way to really protect individual users privacy beyond the lack of data harvesting feels a little bit old. Like when Mastodon was made, it made sense because the fragmenting of the internet was one of the biggest issues with social media.

But now, data privacy is a massive issue on a scope that extends beyond just social media. I gladly pay for Proton services because I never have to worry about encryption, they do it for all their services and are now bringing on a note taking service that utilizes encryption with Standard Notes.

I love Mastodon for what it is, but much like non-fedi social media, its becoming clear that my safety and privacy are not the top priority of those who get to call the shots with this service. Unfortunately, it feels like monetization is starting to become the focus instead.
