breaking development from the eggheads down in R&D

Maelstrom :blobcatuwu:

@sjolsen This is the way tumblr works, and i used to use masto like this until i was told I should boost a lot less often, so im torn now

eestileib (she/her/emacs)

@maelstrom071 @sjolsen

It seems that boosting etiquette has shifted just in the year I've been here. I showed up in the big wave of ex redditors and when I first got here it was "Boost a lot! Like doesn't really do anything."

No longer.

A Distrochist

@eestileib @maelstrom071 @sjolsen

I guess the news never made it to me, I still boost to like and favorite to bookmark. I don’t think I’ll be changing my habits anytime soon.

Maelstrom :blobcatuwu:

@iiogama @eestileib @sjolsen That's good! Because I'll probably be boosting a whole lot more from now on

Jay

@eestileib @maelstrom071 @sjolsen Lawd save me from unspoken rules of etiquette! Rules about bios, rules about following, about following BACK, about liking or boosting or what have you.

I like/found interesting/found valuable/wanted more publicity? I boost.

I want to save? I star.

I want to read later (read: forget and feel guilty about)? I bookmark.

I just like to wander around and read and talk to people and make them laugh. Y’know; be social, read media.

Tony Hoyle

@eestileib @maelstrom071 @sjolsen Boosting is how fedi works.. without it everyone wold have empty timelines.

Like is a dopamine rush. It's good for the sender but not the same.

Edelruth In The Wrong Timeline

@maelstrom071 @sjolsen

Dont let people tell you what to do (except me right now 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣).

I boost liberally.

thefathippy

@maelstrom071 @sjolsen

I just deleted lots of agreeable bleugh, because [text not deleted follows]

Anyhoo, what do I know? Boost/⭐/reply, or not, as you will. 😎

mid_kid

@maelstrom071 @sjolsen to me boosting is simply "I would share this in a group chat with like-minded friends". The question is "would others be interested?".

Ollie

@sjolsen anger the CEO of Hetzner with this one simple trick!!!

yosoof

@sjolsen@tech.lgbt its called bookmark sjolsen. It is called bookmark

Leah :neocat_blush_hide:

@sjolsen@tech.lgbt The staring to show u read it is so accurate though

Maddie
@sjolsen emoji reacts are the "mastodon isn't fedi" button
Vint Prox

@sjolsen Well, guess what? I'm shitposting, liking, marking as read and yuri'ing this for future reference.

DMMickeyT :unverified: :cc_cc:

@sjolsen it's like a secret decoder ring! 😀

Verity (MonoidMusician)

@sjolsen shit, what do i put here? :blobPikaConfused:

Ada :v_trans: :v_pan:

@sjolsen We are still working on an answer, but nyathing haz come up yet! :neocat_science:

Meh as a Service

@sjolsen i mostly use the last one as "better check it's not a shitpost before liking"

(have yet to actually open any of those ever again)

olive

@virtulis "looks like it could be funny or interesting if": "I knew some context" or "I look into it/read the article" (never to see my eyes again)

and some stuff I don't "favourite" but I kinda like but I bookmark and idk I don't really know it just feels like I should bookmark it to maybe see again one day

astroPug

@virtulis

I do, too, sometimes, which is why I gave your comment a read receipt.

Edit: but seriously, I’m afraid of my bookmarks by now. Some of those things I saved might well be the biggest shitposts that I’ll never verify.

Meh as a Service

@sjolsen i got it!

the last button is "big if true"

Lua🏳️‍⚧️

@sjolsen "I might need this in the future"
_forgets about it_

Graham Spookyland🎃/Polynomial

@sjolsen last button is "press this button to remember this post for later then immediately forget this post forever"

#<SB-PCL:SYSTEM-CLASS SJOLSEN>

@gsuberland the computer remembers it for you so you don't have to!

ailepet

@gsuberland @sjolsen I use it for bad takes, so they can show up in my search results* when I need to dig them up in order to Prove A Point
*assuming search is not broken on my instance, which it currently is since the last 3 months

Graham Spookyland🎃/Polynomial

@ailepet @sjolsen you may already know this trick, but if you add "in:library" to a search it constrains the search to posts that you've interacted with, which can be very useful for this (assuming your instance's search is working, of course :P)

ailepet

@gsuberland @sjolsen actually that was the default behavior of my instance search field (until it broke), so I got used to pin information which may become useful later, and retrieve it this way. A very useful trick!

Matt McIrvin

@sjolsen the one on the right is "this is one of my own posts that I'm particularly proud of and might want to refer to later"

Marc

@sjolsen I use the last one when I want to get back to it later (I never get back to it later)

Yusuf Toropov

@corpsmoderne @sjolsen

Use it all the time! "This person wrote something I want to see/reply to later" (e.g., a song they want to hear or a question I didn't know the answer to at the time)

fennec :verified:

@sjolsen i feel like i use a radically different social media

Steve 🇨🇦🇺🇦

@sjolsen @djsundog That’s the button for when you find something nice that’s *not* a shitpost.

I’ve used it maybe twice.

:neocat_flag_trans: Lunya :baba_is: :baba_cute:

@sjolsen@tech.lgbt the bookmark is obviously for posts you want to necroboost later

Willow "Wolveric" Catkin

@sjolsen When I see a reply I made start getting boosted:

James Bow

@sjolsen The red button opens and closes the garage door of some poor guy in Denver. He’s frustrated and confused.

The cat who walks thru walls

@jamesbow Hm, but are you sure it always does that? Its shape is somewhat banner-like, so maybe it tries to lift or lower a banner in Arthurian Camelot first, and it only does the garage door thing if it fails - which it often does, but not always... leading to even more confusion for both the garage door owner and the independent observers. @sjolsen

millions :spinny_cat_bi:
@sjolsen it's simple

The star is for liking a post, the boost button is for if you want your followers to see it, the bookmark is for bookmarking and the arrow is for using your Skibidi Rizz on Local Gyats
JdeB

@sjolsen

I use the 'bookmark' as a form of archive [mostly when in a hurry]

berserk du soleil

@sjolsen that's the colors and pictures of animals button for me

@infosec_jcp 🐈🃏 done differently

@sjolsen

This one's a new button...

' ⚡ Electrify* ' your post ? 🤨

💥 Actually this is just Thread Your Post button but... in keeping with the above theme for 💩.posts on a #ScienceSunday ⚡💩😂🔬

quello che perde i pezzi

@sjolsen sent, liked and shitposted, I was about using the 4th button but now I'm scared

DELETED

@sjolsen

The bookmark is like a time-capsule. I bookmark something, and I see it in 2 months when I remember bookmarks exist.

Cauê

@sjolsen when the flag was added? :thonking:

AcidePoulain

@sjolsen My working hypothesis is that the red button on the right sends toots you'd like to come back to later to a place where you never go so they can be forgotten in a specific place

j'ai écouté 📢👂

@sjolsen
Also, don't forget to press this or else ...

Katze

@sjolsen "bookmark" ⇒ "add to personal search index"

piegames

@sjolsen the last button is "manually register to the search index"

Jorge Vaz Nande

@sjolsen I bookmark my toots when I don't want them to be automatically deleted

Ahto!

@sjolsen bookmarking is for hoarding :3

Princess Sky :gay_medal: (Arial)

@sjolsen@tech.lgbt that last one is "I'm gonna get back to this eventually, I swear "

Josh Justice

@sjolsen @chickenwing I didn't recognize the first one and thought it was quote boost. And i was like

*anime voice* "So……… it has come to this"

Chris Bohn

@sjolsen That last one kind of looks like a snake's tongue -- so maybe it's used to taste the air around a post?

weav

@sjolsen the red one puts it on a special list of cool posts

Blake Leonard

@sjolsen it's if you want to go back to something later. but nobody actually goes back to the something later, you just try searching for it to no avail instead!

so, basically it's neurotypicals only

𝙹𝚘𝚑𝚊𝚗

@sjolsen I always press red for the sake of all the scientists working to unravel its function!

📁 /home/zlendy

@sjolsen@tech.lgbt On misskey and its forks we have two shitpost buttons, "reply" and "reaction" :blobcatpop:

Ian Malcolm

@sjolsen

It's the "I will reply to this post later when I have more time, but in reality will not get around to it, and eventually just remove it again in 80% of cases to avoid necro-posting" button.

AKA the "I will show this amusing and/or interesting post to my partner/kids in person later, because forwarding posts to non-Mastodon users is inconsistent and kinda kludgy" button.

tyx

@sjolsen
The last one is for the case when you feel too asocial to boost it right now, but still like the post.

And i have a long list under that category.

Zen_Fox.tar.gz

@sjolsen for me that mysterious last button is "I should come back to this!"
*Forgets about it 2 seconds later*

Vanalope

@sjolsen the last one for me is "recipe post recall" button.

Kote Isaev

@sjolsen That button at right is "server, please don't delete this post even if it is more than 6 months old", to my opinion.

Tom (tired of the computer)

@sjolsen The bookmark button is for stuff you want to send to people who are asleep

proedie

@sjolsen I use the star as ‘like’ and the boost as ‘love’.

I have exactly one bookmarked post. Forgot what it was, but I remember using it, because it was just a special moment for me to press the button for the first time.

astroPug

@sjolsen

Reminds me to review my many bookmarks. I wish they were sortable into lists.

…I dare not look, it’s probably full with the articles I told myself I’d read but didn’t …

Neku 〰️

@sjolsen the red one might be a "remind me later" function

mkj

@Neku @sjolsen It is. It is "like or send read receipt later or maybe not".

Bonkers

@sjolsen the one on the right is the only way to find a post from a few days or months ago.

Sebastian/S.T. Veje

@sjolsen Bookmark is to save posts for later.

Like is for telling the poster that you saw/liked/appreciated their post.

Boost is for showing interesting things to your followers.

If you comment, there's probably no need to also like, but you might still want to boost.

I'm very bad at following my own system, but I try.

Geneviève☑

@sjolsen Bookmark a podcast, a paper, a meme I like, a recipe...
I'd like to have folders. Sometimes I have to search for a while to found what I want.

Sammy 🐾

@sjolsen the one on the right is for all the good lewds you find so you can look at them again later for reasons

*aeira🦇

@sjolsen the bookmark button - "add to yet another untouched read-later list, also get a minor dopamine boost over a feeling of control over your destiny (a lie)"

Shibanarchiste :verified:🏳️‍⚧️

@sjolsen KEIZOZKGBBSHFJEJAOFJEJDJHQLEJZHFKIFBDJFOGJZODLABDPFVDIALSLFKSOGJ

Nicomede

@sjolsen I'have selected the last button just to make a try but... nothing seem to happen

Terrain

@sjolsen i usually use boost and star as a combo thing. I rarely use either separately. sometimes star as a read receipt for replies to me that I vaguely appreciate, but don't necessarily wanna share

affine
@sjolsen only faving the "boosts welcome" posts to assert dominance.
Arthas Wake

@sjolsen the last one is "I'll masturbate to this later"

Mobius Goddess

@sjolsen ok I laughed at "send read receipt", a nervous kind of laughing

Nocta

@sjolsen The last button is "read later (never)"

Samuel Hautamäki

@sjolsen I still have no idea what that bookmark thingy is supposed to be and what purpose it actually serves, is it meaningless? What does it even do?

SPICY EVIL TINY 🎄:yell: 🎃

@sjolsen the bookmark button is for saving a post to boost in most hilarious moments.

Or to save and later re-boost own posts that got lots of favs

xaph but smaller 🐁

@sjolsen the leading theory on the mystery button is that it's related to some kind of ancient fertility ritual

gadgetoid

@sjolsen nono, star is "like, but you forgot alt text" 😆

Ada Hashtag

@sjolsen favourite is what I use when it's either something I figure most of my followers aren't interested in seeing or a way to say "nice image you have there, shame you didn't caption it, better luck remembering next time"

.: Tonton Mollo :tknpl: :.

@sjolsen
Sorry for shitposting, but I'll like to thank you for this advice.

KarlE

@sjolsen a bit opinionated but quite true. The star and its label looks like "like" but does not much in that respect. There are rumours that the star influences the "discover" feature, but who has time for looking at that... @galileo

KanaMauna

@sjolsen The last button is for posts that will be placed in my grave so I can have reading material in the afterlife.

Arctic
@sjolsen the red button on the right is so I can save a banger post so I could theoretically go back and see it again. I probably won’t but that is besides the point.
Daniel Hardy

@sjolsen that fourth button is “pretend I’ll read this again”.

PixelPerfectEngine

@sjolsen the red one is for bookmarks. It saves the post for future reference.

Not as useful on the fediverse, especially as it doesn't work like a "private like" like on Xitter, and there's way less drama here to pull them out for later.
