Firefly III

So let's write a quick #introduction post if you happen to come over from #twitter or when you're just curious about this profile.

Firefly III started over a decade ago because I couldn't manage my own finances and was over 5K in debt. That may not be a lot to some, but it was enough for me.

I hosted a little tool at GitHub (if I made it open source it was free, and I had no money...) and to my surprise, people started interacting with my code and repo!

Maintaining an actual open source app was totally new for me and over the years I've learned a lot about communities, feature requests, saying "no" but also saying "yes!"

Right now, Firefly III is pretty popular with over 10K stars on GitHub and a loyal band of sponsors and followers. They allow me to spend some time on Firefly III and pay the bills for hosting and such.

So if you have questions or comments, send me a DM, tag me in your post or come find me on GitHub or Gitter.im.

Thanks!

@ff3 No question, but I did appreciate the overview of how double-entry bookeeping works in the documentation, I was pretty confused changing over from my decades-old excel spreadsheet!

Firefly III

@lucas thanks! I wrote it in part to help *me* understand it properly haha

@ff3 thank you so much, I'm just getting started managing my family's finances with Firefly III.

I always wondered where the name came from. Was there a Firefly I and Firefly II?

@ff3 congratulations, and great job getting to this point! Such commitment can't be taken for granted, and I've found your docs/GH activity very inspiring.

I used FF3 twice to get a end-of-year overview of my finances, and it's solid. Hopefully I'll use it more in the future!

@ff3 I switched from other commercial tools for financial management to ff3 recently. I'm not going back. Ff3 let me actually take control of my own assets. Thank you.
