Discord is nuking Nintendo Switch emulator devs and their entire servers - theverge.com/2024/4/11/2412754

Please stop using Discord for... well, anything. Development work, organising, friendly hangouts. But especially anything legally grey or which might even conceivably be against a large company's corporate interests.

Get a Matrix or Signal room, host an IRC channel. Use something else.

With encryption and/or a server you control.

EDIT: okay, look, this post has gone far outside my usual sphere of communication and I'm not very comfortable with that, so I'm trimming it and muting it. I'm sure you're all lovely, but I'm a somewhat-managed ball of anxiety. Be nice to each other.

@HauntedOwlbear We've known this for some time. It's what made me anxious about contributing to @pretendo - they haven't disclosed whether they have backups of all the stuff that's stored in their discord. I hope they do. It'd be a shame for all the preservation work to be nuked for shady reasons by a shady company.

@HauntedOwlbear Also if it doesn't even have to have encryption, web forums still exist, they've been around for decades and they're still viable for communities.

@Cal Yeah, I've never been on a project so in need of instant responses that a forum wouldn't work just as well.

It bothers me that people who are often sceptical of, for example, Meta, don't bat an eyelid at using Discord because it's acquired a reputation of being developer/gamer friendly.

@HauntedOwlbear Considering how emulation is critical for video game preservation, the industry push against emulation is anti consumer behaviour at it's finest.
