Gregory's ServerTurns out it's not my M.2 NVMe drive that's bad, but the NUC's interface to it. I have never heard of such a thing, but of course it's possible. The drive works fine when put into a USB adapter. And the SATA adapter in the NUC works fine, too.

@J12t could it be different signaling maybe? I have a flash drive that won't work on any USB3 interface, but has no issue with USB2. Your usb adapter could be using a lower PCIe generation that doesn't trigger your issue...
