Nuclear power! Again? omg - excited to block a whole bunch of nuclear bros that I didn't block the last time I did a cartoon about how supporters of nuclear power are shils and marks theguardian.com/commentisfree/

@firstdogonthemoon I saw someone posting yesterday about how he just couldn't understand why more women than men dislike the idea of expanding nuclear power generation

and I thought, really? because it's pretty clear to me why that would be the case

worldwide

@firstdogonthemoon They just need to look at France. They are relying heavily on nuclear power and when the drought of 22 and 23 forced them to shut down their nuclear power plants due to lack of cooling, they had to import german solar- and wind-sourced electricity ...
Also, nobody wants the waste buried in their backyard. Or the risks of having such juicy terrorist targets near heavily populated areas.

Near their house? If Putin succeeds in creating a problem with Ukraine's Nuclear power, the whole EU expects to suffer.

@Eatsbluecrayon @firstdogonthemoon that's factually incorrect - many plants don't have to be shutdown in case of extended weather. A lot of the shutdowns were maintenance that was postponed during COVID lockdowns, for instance. (See catf.us/2023/07/2022-french-nu). That period was "celebrated" by supporters of the German policy because for the first year in half a century, France imported more than it exported to Germany; but the situation quickly reverted (bloomberg.com/news/articles/20).

@jpetazzo @Eatsbluecrayon @firstdogonthemoon

If I remember correctly, it was mostly maintenance and only 2-3 plants that had to reduce their output due to cooling water temperatures rising above permitted thresholds for discharging it back into the rivers it came from.

@firstdogonthemoon @dgoldsmith I’d want one, if not necessarily literally in my backyard lawn of 50 m^2, but certainly in my town. Dutton aside nuclear is one tool to help adapt, it’s not a silver bullet. Br. nukebro

Syulang

@mojala @firstdogonthemoon @dgoldsmith It's safe.... Right up until it turns our local environment into an uninhabitable radioactive moshpit for the next ten thousand years.

enoch_exe_inc

@Syulang @mojala @firstdogonthemoon @dgoldsmith That’s not very likely to happen, barring extreme, unforeseen circumstances (like a massive earthquake followed by an equally massive tsunami); or extreme, unholy incompetence, wilful disregard of safety procedures, and continued use of a reactor with known design flaws (Chernobyl).

enoch_exe_inc

@Syulang @mojala @firstdogonthemoon @dgoldsmith I have greater confidence in the emerging Generation IV reactors, though, and the fast-fission and breeder reactors required to complete the nuclear fuel cycle. Once those are up and running, the amount of nuclear waste they’ll produce will be dramatically reduced; and whatever is left unrecyclable will take only a few hundred years to decay, as opposed to tens of thousands.

Syulang

@enoch_exe_inc @mojala @firstdogonthemoon @dgoldsmith I do regard human incompetence as one of our savings graces (we're too stupid and half arsed to be able to successfully wipe out all life), but fission is one situation where our income.pitence makes us *more* dangerous.

I do sincerely believe we are too stupid as a species to be trusted with nuclear systems. If we can break something, we will. No matter how hard we try to make it idiot proof.

Syulang

@enoch_exe_inc @mojala @firstdogonthemoon @dgoldsmith
We should remember there was an incident where a person once stuck their head in a particle accelerator.....

enoch_exe_inc

@Syulang @enoch_exe_inc @mojala @firstdogonthemoon @dgoldsmith …and still somehow survived, despite receiving the equivalent radiation dosage to kill ten people. I heard about that.

enoch_exe_inc

@Syulang @enoch_exe_inc @mojala @firstdogonthemoon @dgoldsmith I don’t. The nuclear industry is among the safest in the world and kills the least number of people per unit of energy produced. It just happen to be in the unique position of having a lot of political baggage attached to it.

enoch_exe_inc

@Syulang @enoch_exe_inc @mojala @firstdogonthemoon @dgoldsmith Also, nuclear chemistry and nuclear physics is significantly less well understood by the general public compared to other fields of science. So, misinformation is rife and fears about radiation is frequently more deadly than radiation itself.

enoch_exe_inc

@Syulang @enoch_exe_inc @mojala @firstdogonthemoon @dgoldsmith For example, no one died from radiation at Fukushima, but the extensive evacuations caused major disruptions to the lives of thousands of people and caused about 1600 people to die, mainly from suicide.

@firstdogonthemoon Even calling it nuclear power instead of a plutonium factory is propaganda

Syulang

@VoxofGod @firstdogonthemoon that I suspect is the second reason the Libs shill for it, beings derailing renewables .... They've got the nuke subs, now they want the weapons to go with them.

@firstdogonthemoon

Nuclear is one possibility to get the Big Oil boot off our necks.

However, considering what's happened to Japan's nuclear power stations...it might be prudent to re-evaluate fission until fusion is available.

Or Ukraine's nuclear plant that was shelled by Russia.

Biden was right to celebrate progress on fusion.

@Npars01 @firstdogonthemoon

Appears to me that building a nuclear reactor is a perfect way by which you can plant a nuclear weapon, or at very least a huge dirty bomb in your backyard that can be triggered by anyone with conventional explosives.

Nicole Parsons

@peterrelph @firstdogonthemoon

A nuclear reactor isn't a nuclear bomb until the cooling systems are made dysfunctional.

Stuart Longland (VK4MSL)

@firstdogonthemoon If they could make a "small modular reactor", maybe the size of a large suitcase that powered a house or two… and could be made intrinsically safe … with good a return-to-base policy to dispose of waste and refuel it when its fuel is spent… perhaps.

If you need something bigger than a semi-trailer to transport the whole thing, forget it!

@firstdogonthemoon I am just waiting for Dutts to bring a lump of raw uranium ore into the House of Reps. We all know the Libs love anything they can dig up.

@firstdogonthemoon I have $100B and would like to buy one of these SMRs, when will I have it?

Thank you for the word
"Fossilvascillating"

Estarriol, Cat owned Dragon

@firstdogonthemoon I am happy with the idea of Fusion power, but while close we are still at least 10 years away (and have been 10 years away for the last 50 years) and fossil and fission proponants will keep putting things in the way.

augustinomontenegro

@firstdogonthemoon funny how you are comparing fukushima affected and didn't mention the number of people who died due to the radiation
i'd love to see the comparison of how many people have died per KwH due to nuclear and renewables, maybe that will help shed a light on how safe nuclear really is

DELETED

@firstdogonthemoon Because whatever the view we are currently dependent on it. Could that be it?

Beeks

@firstdogonthemoon feel free to block me I guess because I trust science and data. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Earthworm

@Beeks

Since there are lobby groups for everything that can make money for some rich people, somebody claiming "I trust science and data" is not very convincing, especially in very polarized and industry-influenced fields of research (says a scientist).
Check your power analysis.

Beeks

@earthworm I wasn't expecting to convince the "I'll block anyone who disagrees with me" guy tbh, I was mostly mocking him for his proud ignorance.

@firstdogonthemoon the money would be better spent on an east-west link. we could get so much more out of solar with the timezone spread.
