There is no algorithm here, throwing posts (and trolls) in your face, like there is on the commercial social media platforms. What you see is 100% dependent upon:
* what you RT, and
* which accounts & hashtags you follow.

(Yes, you CAN follow hashtags here.)

There is no algorithm to know you want to see more posts about a topic like crochet, unless you follow crochet accounts and/or follow the hashtag #crochet. So there can be thousands of crochet posts you will never see.

I have just noticed on the newsie.social web UI, one of the Explore options is a listing of 'posts that are gaining traction today. Newer posts with more boosts and favourites are ranked higher'.

Never noticed that before.
Always assumed listing was solely chronological.
Don't know if this is on other web UIs on other instances or available in apps.

I could do the research but I won't.

Sometimes wish the trending hashtag list was longer

Explore/Trending is a standard part of Mastodon on all servers, it shows new posts with lots of recent boosts, and hashtags that are being used a lot recently.

The other timelines are all chronological.
