@jsbarretto windows and Linux desktop you press and hold down the ALT key. Then type the three digit ASCII or extended ASCII code using your number keys, then release the ALT key.

Delta symbol: ALT-196
Square Root: ALT-251
Pi: ALT-227 (my favorite!)

@jsbarretto well, the method *i* know for getting symbols on a phone is:

1) google for a web page with that symbol on it

2) highlight that one character

3) copy to clipboard

4) paste into target document.

Works as easily on a phone, tablet or desktop PC.
