Because not everyone can be vigilant and aware.

The default should be the thing that best protects people and avoids enshittification , or at least the thing people expect to have happen. (People did not expect what happened at Facebook.).

@ThreeSigma people are definitely vigilant and aware. They literally found this guy and started yelling at him before he even turned the thing on. How is that less work than tuning your own server instance so it's not wide open?

people who are vigilant and aware because of what happened to them in commercial social networks became aware of this plan, and reacted accordingly.

I can't say I saw a lot of "shouting" and "yelling" at him, as opposed to a considerable amount of shouting about his plans, and a lot of people filing complaints about those plans in the venues he specifically laid out as the preferred venues for providing those complaints.

if the guy feels hard done by, then its pretty obvious that he's not faced the same level of threat against him as a person which those who were vigilant and aware have come to be accustomed to, and would rather not revisit.

@dgold @ThreeSigma totally. Now all we gotta do is hope that everybody continues to announce their plans first. So we have an opportunity to express our strong disapproval *before* they walk through the door we continue to leave wide open. Makes sense. Thanks.
