It's surprising that they behave differently for private v. public repos. As far as git itself is concerned the two are indistinguishable (except you'd need some form of authentication to fetch).
Do you mean a frontend that also handles stuff like Github issues ans pull requests?

@mithicspirit @b0rk It's a common upsell tactic - free for opensource! But you 'rich' commercial users have to pay! GitKraken uses this model.
To be clear I'd happily make a one-time purchase of software... but ongoing subscriptions are nickel & dimeing me to death. ðŸ˜
