Gregory's ServerWe have a forestry student, Rene, from Germany doing postgrad student here at #LincolnUniversityNZ. Rene has been telling me about how trees are harvested for timber in parts of northern Europe.
That included me learning about these amazing "walking tractor timberjack" machines. They selectively fell trees on variable terrain while limiting the damage to the forest floor.
It's like some sci-fi insect elephant machine.

@joncounts there's some hope of moving Nelson's forests to that kind of harvesting. But first we have to replace the P. radiata with new forests ready to selectively harvest from. Some progress has been made on the agreements but the trees will take a while yet.
