This has probably been done before, but I'm still curious how the OS spread is on the fedi.

What are you running on your main* personal desktop/laptop?

Boost for reach please! 😍

* The machine you use the most. 😉

@n3wjack All 3 🤣 I’m bad at picking a side

Extreme Electronics

@n3wjack you are assuming I only have one laptop.

Currently Linux, Linux, Windows :)

n3wjack

@Extelec pick the OS you use the most then. You probably have a main machine right? 😁

Jean-Yves

@n3wjack main laptop is macOS (I’m contract/freelance dev), my other main laptop for personal projects is Linux, and I keep a Win10 laptop going, “just in case”. Which mostly consists of booting it up once a week, applying updates, then shutting it down ;) )

Porkchop D. Clown

@n3wjack Lol. I use windows for paperwork, Linux for development, and a Mac at home. Which I use most depends on my schedule.

Feyter

@obvioustroll @n3wjack that's interesting. What do you classify as "paperwork" and why do you prefer windows for it?

Porkchop D. Clown

@feyter @n3wjack Heh. I work for a Fortune 100 company so all email, office communications, etc., must be done with the "standard" software which means Office 365. I could let them take control of my personal Mac but I prefer to keep my personal life separate from my work life.

Feyter

@obvioustroll @n3wjack ok I understand. Isn't there a web app for all this applications by now?

Always embarrassing that big companies are so depending on Microsoft and don't see this as a problem 🤷‍♂️

Joe Chott

@n3wjack You DO realize MacOS is unix, yes?

Larry Garfield

@n3wjack Gah, hit windows by accident while scrolling. It's really Linux.

David Nelson

@Crell @n3wjack It’s ok, I think we all assume the Windows votes were accidental.

Sam Thurston :verified:

@n3wjack a little annoying that android/chromeos isn't a contender here. I do have a desktop computer but I rarely use it for fediverse stuff.

Matrix9180 :ruby: :rust:

@samthurston @n3wjack technically those fall under Linux, which was already an overloaded choice

Sam Thurston :verified:

@matrix9180 @n3wjack I'm aware but that doesn't mean I have to like it 😅

Is your main vehicle a:

* Car
* Truck
* Bicycle/helicopter/SUV

Wow the bicycle option really doing some surprise numbers!

n3wjack

@matrix9180 @samthurston there aren't enough options to split up all *nixes 😂
#nerds

Attie Grande

@n3wjack It's a split for me - my monitors are connected to a Windows PC, partly out of familiarity, but largely for software like Office, Altium & Solidworks... that said, I virtually always have one or more SSH connections to a more powerful Linux system, where nearly *all* the rest of my activities are carried out.

Dwight Silverman

@n3wjack This won’t tell you “how the OS spread is on the fedi,” just the OS spread among the people who see this post and choose to respond. But I wonder if there is some kind of analytics or a stats site that will give you that info.

Jason Haar :laserkiwi:

@dsilverman @n3wjack The Mastodon web server logs should tell you what OS users are running. Of course with Federation, each Mastodon instance has a different target audience and so doesn't reflect the entirety either

DELETED

@n3wjack i've got a linux laptop that i barely use, and i use windows for work, but for my next computer, i'm thinking about getting a mac, since that feels very geared towards designers

n3wjack

@rozina yeah, designers seem to swear by it. I just don't like how Apple tries to suck you into their ecosystem by making interop harder with non-Apple stuff.

Nadav🏳️‍🌈🇪🇺🇩🇪🇮🇱🎗️

@n3wjack
Idk, a decade ago or even more it was a must for designers, but nowadays... Well, it's not, and all Adobe stuff is available for Wind*ws. So if anything, its place among designers has deteriorating.
@rozina

Will

@n3wjack Comedy vote for Chrome OS (seriously)

Alona

@n3wjack wdym "running"? the OS boots into windows, but most of the work is done either on WSL, or SSH'd into a linux box

Todduh

@n3wjack
I use macOS and iPhone the most for day job.
I use Linux and Android for personal use.

Human 3500

@n3wjack Under the covers, it looks a bit like a Linux but stripped down and modified.

Joris

@n3wjack Windows, too lazy to look for alternatives🙁

Tirifto :korektu_min:

@n3wjack I use GNU, which is neither Linux nor Unix. :gutkato_teo:

Laukidh :ablobcool:

@n3wjack @evan I’ll say Mac, but really I barely touch anything but my phone and tablet. (Keyboards are rough on my hands)

mkj

@Laukidh @n3wjack @evan If it's either Android or iPhone, that probably counts as *nix (although with a highly customized userland in both cases). And you don't have to scratch the surface very hard before Mac OS X is a *nix. So really the only not-*nix choice in this poll would seem to be Windows. 🙂

Matrix9180 :ruby: :rust:

@n3wjack Arch configured to look like mint on both my laptop and desktop. Distro hopping on my phone now that Google stopped updating it.

Elrick Winter

@n3wjack Currently Linux and Windows on two different machines. But i'm switching to Linux only, because Windows (insert screaming here...)

Vivi, The Heinous Witch

@n3wjack @eniko as a Mac user myself i am very surprised by how high Mac is in this poll

n3wjack

@TheEnbyWitch @eniko true, I expected it to be 3rd
Poll ain't over yet though. Go Windows! 😂

ikari

@n3wjack it should be a multi select though

Karen E. Lund 💙💛

@n3wjack A Chromebook, but there's a little Linux under the hood.

Marty Fouts

@n3wjack Every time someone runs this poll the results demonstrate that the people who self select to respond are not at all representative of the general population. What I can’t figure out is if they are representative or the fediverse population or if the poll results are biased by self selection.

Dan Lyke

@n3wjack voted Mac, because I got that hardware from work, but even my wife, who is not a techie, is using her decade+ old Linux laptop for a lot of stuff because it works better than her relatively new Macbook Air.

It's a crappy platform, and if the Macs available for repurposing could run Linux decently, we'd be switching back.

ZanaGB

@n3wjack having macOS be separated from the BSD's and *NIX boxes, damn!

Light🐧⁂

@fabiscafe @n3wjack
Me too, Arch Linux on my main machine 😊️. Debian on an old ThinkPad and on my Raspberry Pis. Also have two ancient desktops one of them running Antix and another OpenBSD.

Carolyn

@n3wjack I've seen a number of these and it seems to be influenced by your particular followers. :)

@n3wjack@mastodon.social hoo boy i voted windows, my personal experience with windows makes me feel like a lucky bastard sometimes whenever i hear other people say their windows experience was an utter nightmare lol

for one i don't really have any problems personally with windows 11 when it comes to actual user experience, really my only gripe was the taskbar not being movable anymore, so i just got a copy of startallback and put it on the left like i usually do. + a neat lil taskbar button icon i made myself

i have tried linux! the first distro i ever got working was debian stable with the help of a friend, using the gnome desktop environment. i really like the experience for what it is, but unfortunately since i like to draw in clip studio paint and edit 12+ minute YTPs in premiere pro, until wine compatibility's improved i'd either have to start dualbooting or stick with windows' ecosystem as i'm already comfortable with that

i distinctively remember having kasane teto as my wallpaper on my debian instance. originally i was going to try XFCE to see if i could get compiz working because like, despite my tolerance with windows i will admit the customization isn't nearly as open-minded as linux. plus like have you SEEN that fucking 3d desktop cube thing? or the wobbly windows? the only way to get that on windows is through stardock so i'd have to cough up another 20 bucks for it to work, and even then i doubt they'll be maintaining it per windows updates

with alternate software that works on linux, i do like krita! i was able to get a similar-ish experience after some hassle but my personal deal breaker is how the fill tool is unable to close gaps in linework. due to the wonders of "open source development" it hasn't become a feature outside of the planning stage for the last few years and the only thing that exists right now is a python script that i don't know how to use in krita. they just like gave me it and provided no guide whatsoever

considering windows is legitimately the least amount of votes on this poll i figured id actually explain why i've stuck with windows despite microsoft's attempts to make it less habitable for me (in a situation where i don't really give a darn as long as i can do my usual tomfoolery without the operating system telling me i should buy a digital rock or something)

started with windows 7 home i believe on a shitty little green acer laptop

Jeremy List

@n3wjack in theory Linux. In practice my computer spends most of its time booted into Haiku.

Orc

@n3wjack too bad it’s not a multiple choice question, ‘cuz osx is a unix!

n3wjack

@orc I know, but it's different enough cause Apple and custom hardware etc

Ursan Marius Bogdan :mastodon:

@n3wjack i have a dual boot system, but since i do more gaming i need to boot windows more often :)

Jordan “Yordan” Wight

@n3wjack My laptop has a dual boot of Kubuntu and Windows 11 with it defaulting to Kubuntu. I still use Windows slightly more, though, mainly because that’s where all my music is.

❄️SnowBård❄️

@n3wjack
Feels so wrong... Yes, the actual laptop I use most frequently, runs windows. But the device I use Mastodon on, runs Android... 😅

n3wjack

@baardhaveland haha, yeah, I also check mastodon mostly on my phone

Sir David Nielsen

@n3wjack @lisamelton the machine I use the most is my iPad Pro, so iPadOS.

Sir David Nielsen

@n3wjack I have an older iMac 5K, but I hardly ever use it. My iPad Pro is faster, the software is superior and it is always with me, while I have to go to my office to use my Mac.

My point was more than you ignore how powerful something like the iPad Pro is, quite a lot of people don’t need a laptop anymore.

n3wjack

@DavidNielsen True. It depends on what you do daily with the device. Tablets and phones can do most common tasks these days. I see people in my family not needing laptops anymore, except for work.

Big Head Tales

@n3wjack
Tough one… I use a Mac laptop for writing and general office type work, I use a Windows machine for gaming and AI.

ansible42

@n3wjack they all end up with Linux eventually. Never had one start that way

n3wjack

@ansible42 not sure I get what you mean here. 🤔

Mike

@n3wjack I wish I was a cool Linux person. But I just keep going back to Mac because it's just easy 🤷‍♂️.

Quick Fastly

@n3wjack@mastodon.social linux exclusively for a couple years now, pretty much everything just works. all my games work, fl studio and all my plugins for it work, all other software I ever used is either natively supported or has at least one great alternative available, and updates never make my computer worse anymore. it's very boring

the only time I touch windows anymore is for sim racing, because software support for some wheel drivers and accessories doesn't quite meet my needs on linux yet (though my current wheel does work fine!), and every time I turn that computer on it finds a new way to give me a headache

Reilly Spitzfaden (they/them)

@n3wjack I already voted, but I use macOS because I like Logic Pro for music production and because I can't run Max/MSP on Linux

SpaceLifeForm

@n3wjack

The last time I saw this type of poll, Windows still sucked.

nebula

@n3wjack Given that everything other than Windows and macOS is a small fraction of personal OS market share, this poll just shows that mainstream Fediverse adoption isn’t here yet

Warlock Of Wires

@n3wjack

Mac
for CAD and video editing and my day job programs . Its stable and i LOVE time machine..

Mint mate for my servers and obscure computers..

Windows 10 pro for games and VR .

Tim Hare

@n3wjack Windows - for two reasons. Inertia from when I used to consult with former employers who were Windows-only shops; and because I am tech support for my author spouse who operates on Windows - better to try new stuff on mine, rather than hers

dianea 🏳️‍⚧️

@n3wjack I feel bad for those still using proprietary operating systems

Kevin Miller

@n3wjack @timbray now I get why normals have a hard time getting into Mastodon. It’s neck beards all the way down.

DELETED

@n3wjack just stopped debian after 3 years. Back on windows 10 with a good firewall. No gafam software go in or out.

Dr. Kidpixo 🔢🛰☄🌐🔨💻 ⌨️ 🐍🐧🚲

@n3wjack
I have used Apple since the beginning of the 80s (I was around 5,it was my dad's computer), then Mac. I had some Win machines from work , but always refused them after a while.
During the pandemic my Mac broke and I worked with a used ThinkPad x250 I had to learn how to install Arch Linux. Now I moved the installation to a newer AMD ThinkPad and used Linux exclusively for 3 years, no regrets.

Phil L.

@n3wjack

My desktop runs Windows but the computer (tablet) that I use the most runs Android

JimmyChezPants

@n3wjack

Answered Windows but it's a temporary thing. Giving the drivers time to mature. Once every ten years or so my laptop is fairly new tech, I happen to be in one of those rare moments.

Grzegorz Cichocki

@n3wjack Linux both on my personal (Fedora) and work (Pop!_OS) laptop
