Doctor Memory
If they get Voyager 1 working again, this will go down in history as the absolute pinnacle of the art of debugging. You think _your_ codebase and kubernetes cluster is hard to deal with? Motherfucker try doing this with a delay of light-hours.
If there’s an award for this it should be in the shape of Margaret Hamilton standing next to a pile of printouts taller than her. https://fosstodon.org/@AkaSci/112091847867604195
@memory
Don't forget that the source code of the original system was only available on printed sheets, and all of this documentation and blueprints etc have been locked in dusty file cabinets since 20 years before most of the people working on the project were born...
#Amazing.
@memory @AkaSci I think people are misinterpreting the response.
@memory @jwz When Voyager 1 was designed and built, running any computer program involved handing a stack of punched cards through a window to an operator and picking up your printout the next morning.
The interactive debugger took the form of lights, switches, and buttons on the front panel of the machine. And nobody dared touch them during operation.
