Fondly recalling a time when tools producing bad output, like frontpage and Dreamweaver, were admonished as unprofessional. Today's "modern JS" transpiling frameworks create far worse artifacts. Bloated, brittle, obfuscated, inaccessible messes.

@brianleroux I remember the painstaking lengths I once went to to avoid a single unnecessary wrapping div. And how I obsessed over getting a CMS to output nicely indented HTML. Pretty meaningless, but the art of the craft meant something. After I moved into βJS framework-powered developmentβ I no longer have any clue what is shipped to the browser. Some gigantic hodgepodge of transpiled npm modules and JSX-generated markup. Itβs sad β I miss knowing and caring about all my bytes-over-the-wire!

@brianleroux I dunno, I think the modern web is pretty great for building stuff and I'm consistently amazed how quickly complex, well-performing features can be built today. |
