Ex-cult musings: As a child growing up in a Doom's Day cult, I was taught to not put too much effort into this world. Because one day, God was supposed to come in and wipe it all out. After all, the world was supposedly full of bad people who deserved to be terminated, right? However, if you look at my home TL here on Mastodon, it's full of people who give of their time to help others in their corner of the fediverse, people encouraging each other, checking in on each other, sharing gtk's, pointing out social inequities, advocating for social change. All that to say, since leaving, I treat every day as a chance to enrich the lives of those around me And I fill my worlds, both virtual and physical, with people who hope to leave the world better than they found it.
All that to say, the world we've built for ourselves can be wiped out someday due to a number of factors that have nothing to do with religion. But in the here and now, I choose to care about the world I live in, rather than dismiss it as I was taught to do. When you realize that the world is full of mostly good people who mean well, it's amazing how your attitude and world view can change.

@SingingNala Thank you for sharing that, and I couldn't agree more!
I didn't grow up in a doomdsday cult, but pretty damn close. We went to a hellfire and brimstone pentecostal church. I was taught that Jesus was coming back at any moment, and if I said one cuss word before that or dying I was damned to hell for eternity.
I don't want to take away from your positive message because that is why I LOVE the #Fediverse too. It's almost like 1/3 of the USA is in a doomsday cult now.
Do you have any advice for helping us rescue family from the MAGA death cult?
