there's some butterfly theory where, if the DOJ never opened their investigation into microsoft, we never would've seen scooby doo shaking his dumper to charli xcx

you could walk into a store in 2004, pay $20 for Microsoft Plus, and get a whole set of people dancing on your taskbar. what a world

i still think bell labs is crazy. that was a telephone company. can you imagine if t-mobile invented lasers and unix

@samhenrigold Wait until you find out about the photocopier company that invented the modern computer GUI amongst other things (at Xerox Parc)...

@samhenrigold I think more companies should fund open ended research with no short to medium term profit goal off it. Especially when they publicly publish it all. Bell labs was basically like a university research department with near unlimited funding

Oliver Geer

@samhenrigold It is amazing. I think Bell Labs was owned by AT&T which _is_ now in a very similar role to T-Mobile! (forgive me if I'm wrong - I'm a European and don't live in the US)

ruthlessly optimizing all of my subscriptions to use as many student discounts as possible until my alma mater turns off my .edu email

Harshil Shah :psyduck:

@samhenrigold I’ve never had one of those but I’m curious, do they actually expire? I remember getting an email from a startup guy once from a stanford address lol

Григорий Клюшников

University emails are one of those things that I keep hearing about from the English-speaking world but have never had one myself, it's just not done over here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In former Soviet states you get a "student ticket" (literal translation) that you extend every year at the dean's office and this is what gets you all the discounts

why did my cellular ipad get a 212 number. what an absolute waste

YOU ALL SEEING THIS TRENDING HASHTAG??? TOO MANY WAFFLES. IF YOU ASK ME. THAT'S TOO MANY WAFFLES. IF YOU EVEN CARED TO ASK. #waffle996

@samhenrigold given how horrible humans are, I'm surprised more species haven't picked up smoking

Ooooooo we're cooking with peanut oil now, gang!!
- Added some perlin noise wriggle effects to the pucker center, added FBM to make it extra erratic
- Stacked CAEmitterLayers with some special CAEmitterBehaviors (thanks to this blog post bryce.co/caemitterbehavior/)
- Applied a CITwirlDistortion to the vortex emitter’s layer to emulate this spiral galaxy effect

Last things are figuring out the file drop/ejection effects and choreographing the whole thing

(and making the starfield look less shitty, I guess)

@samhenrigold …pucker center. 😑

You need a hand at either side of the window to demonstrate the stretch properly

What are some great, small-ish software companies out there that are doing good —  maybe a tiny bit weird, definitely interesting – but *good* work? I'm thinking companies like Linear or the Browser Company. Companies that might not have a content designer.

In related news: Microsoft laid me off this week.

designers. gimme some app store screenshot tips. i’ve been winging it for the past five years and haven’t really found my groove.

@samhenrigold I think the only useful advice is to try two different approaches and A/B test them

So I made a macOS thing. It's a fidget spinner, but with a twist.

Made possible thanks to @samhenrigold posting about his own experiments with these private APIs.

The SwiftUI/shader method was a bit of a dead-end since it would've meant I had to make a fake Mac window from scratch and then apply the shader. Which is silly and goofy and dumb.

But you know what's even goofier and dumber but more efficient? Abusing private APIs like CGSSetWindowWarp. Making good progress here.

The window remains fully interactive and mouse clicks get translated too, so you can do precise things like use a slider.

btw the window remains almost fully interactive, this does break hit testing for the title bar (but not close/maximize/minimize buttons) and it jumps if you do manage to start dragging it

bolted awake about two hours ago at midnight because i figured out how to actually build something that I've been trying to make for the longest time. Little proof of concept prototype

I made this file compression concept in Apple Motion in 2022. Not a shabby recreation of the core effect!

We released Mastodon 4.3 today, packed with a lot of awesome features: blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/10/

I want to thank @Claire, @Gargron, @dave for their hard work on the code, as well as @samhenrigold for the design. Also a lot of thanks to our regular contributors, including @matt and @thisismissem

Now let's focus on 4.4! We have a lot of exiting things to work on, we will do our best to release it before September 2025 😅

@renchap @Claire @Gargron @dave @samhenrigold @matt @thisismissem

The change log reads amazing. Thank you all for your vision, determination, and hard work. Also, props to Hugo at masto.host who runs the rock-solid instance-as-a-service I rely on.

Elysia Macht

@renchap NO grey text, please. Text needs to be visible, not try to blend in or fade in input boxes or otherwise. Things need to be visible, with clear separation or defining borders or whatever, the way the faint grey where there is now white in the background used to be. For one.

Some of us need to SEE text as well. Whether because of ageing, failing eyesight or some other reason.

This new text is far too faint.

Also, NEED to be able to scroll-read posts replied to in FULL. Basic needs.

@Mastodon Mastodon has been working poorly since the last update. Video isn't working. Today it has been down for at least 10 hours. It won't load.

Simon

@Mastodon cool but when will we get quote retweets?

Marina :crayons: :nuggie:

@Mastodon Hey there. I have a custom background on my server and ever since this update, all of my posts are transparent. So none of the text is readable. I haven't been able to get help anywhere. Would you be able to tell me how to make the background of my posts white as it was before? I would be very grateful.
