i'm not a linux/windows boy but if I were, the thinkpad x1 carbon gen 13 aura edition (rolls off the tongue) looks mighty good @taylorlorenz It's similar to politics. You’re rarely gonna get to exactly where you want (a perfect candidate or, in this case, users spread out uniformly based on an informed server decision), but some progress is better than nothing at all. You vote for the candidate that gets closer to what you wanna see and you design the experience that gets closer to the outcome you wanna see (in this case, ushering people the fuck away from Twitter rather than letting them say "this is too complex, nvm”) And it’s not just Mastodon. Matrix has a lot of room for progression when it comes to removing the techno jargon from the UI, but at least the matrix.org homeserver allows newcomers to try the app and not have to worry about figuring out what server to pick.

okay fine i'll start some shit: windows metro had a tremendous amount of potential. it was just overambitious in the input method stuff. but the visual design principles? they nailed it. faithful to the international style, really strong type, i love the wayfinding signage metaphor. really really good stuff.

@samhenrigold Yes! I tried out the then-new Windows Phone at SXSW many years ago (oh boy, I am an old person) and was super impressed by the way things looked and worked – lots of good ideas there. @samhenrigold 😩 Thanks. My heart hurts again thinking about Live Tiles and the vertically‐scrolling Home Screen and the big Segoe type. Oh! And the flips and animations! Metro worked so, so well in Windows Phone 7. Windows 8, not so much, like Microsoft rushed and didn't think through what made Metro Metro. you're joking but there exists an ARM instruction for one JS-specific number conversion You might be attempting to make a joke. But my ass is old enough to have partaken in the age in which scammy products like these were not figments of imagination but were actually advertised. I will do this conversion on a 20-inch iMac only when I’m able to make it Retina. So whenever someone wants to manufacture a 20 inch, 3696-by-2310 display with P3 support, I’ll be first in line. https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/19/24274206/imac-g4-docklite-g4-external-monitor-display-hdmi-conversion-apple-silicon-mac big deal. i can recognize shapes and the presence of my brain has been contested. you’re not special honey @samhenrigold trying to come up with a witty retort that combines French fries and politics and the best I can come up with is “pomme deterrent”

@samhenrigold omg. Amazing. Now I am thinking can I port this to a Konami code JavaScript file for websites. "it has no business requiring the very latest OS, let me lower the deployment target real quick", I thought Some implementation details: In the original product from 2003, each dancer had two videos — the dancer on a black background and a white-on-black matte. This saved a ton of space on the CD-ROM since transparent videos were (and still are) enormous. They would just composite them together on the system to make a transparent video. I’m doing the same thing in my implementation. I use an AVMutableComposition to sync up the two video tracks and handle the timeline-y stuff... @samhenrigold Your reality is coming undone and you will soon be reduced to a blubbering mess, wishing that you had made any other choice, selected any alternatives that could have lead you away from this hellscape, where you feel only anguish and terror for the rest of your days. This will be an error in Swift 6. fully convinced Swift 6 will be the apocalypse based on how many warnings I’m getting that say something like “this will be a much larger problem for you very soon” @samhenrigold based on the current reception of Swift 6 I expect larger scale reverts and changes in the language. I’ll wait until them to adapt the news. @samhenrigold Your reality is coming undone and you will soon be reduced to a blubbering mess, wishing that you had made any other choice, selected any alternatives that could have lead you away from this hellscape, where you feel only anguish and terror for the rest of your days. i ported the scooby skeleton dancing thing to the Macintosh https://hachyderm.io/@samhenrigold/113307328021293777 hoping to finish, release it, and open the source code this weekend. the code is nothing to gawk at but maybe there's something interesting in how I’m masking the video player with the original alpha mattes? i’m using AVVideoCompositing which I haven't heard about until, like, two hours ago when i was a kid, old family friends would tell me i’m an “old soul” and “grew up in the wrong generation.” i did not. i enjoy kissing men and lead regulations and not eating jello salad. i inherited my grandmas recipe book when she passed. some stuff is fantastic. the other is some of the most horrifying post-war food you’ve ever seen:

person who grew up in massachusetts seeing the name “port chester” for the first time: “pooster” might be an unpopular opinion here on mastodon but i don't care for that trump fellow @samhenrigold I swear I heard him saying something the other day that might not have been 100% correct … ten years ago, Set It Off released the Duality album and nobody has been able to reach that level of perfection since i was considering buying a Sonos soundbar a few months ago when I got a new TV but seeing the disaster of their app turned me off of it big time. in case you were ever wondering if app quality has a direct impact on the bottom line https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/15/24270677/sonos-arc-ultra-soundbar-sub-4-announced @samhenrigold I have the basic sound bar and honestly I used the app once when I set it up initially and never needed it again. Works great on my TV and with Spotify Connect from my phone or laptop. Unless you're trying to control ten speakers across five rooms honestly I don't think the app matters at all, you can just ignore it and use the nice hardware. um did i just make the song of the summer??? no, i made toast and it’s autumn. hope this helps 🫶 |
@samhenrigold it looks very nice, but the fact that you don't have a 64gb option would be a deal breaker for me. Usually you can customize them, I wonder if they'll have customizable options later
