Using Twitter isn't just bad because it means you're generating value for Elon Musk. It's also bad because Twitter's environment habituates poor character traits, and so makes its users worse people. https://www.reimaginingliberty.com/twitter-x-as-a-bubble-for-bad-ethics/

The state of social media feeds by @kchayka is another argument for the controls afforded in the fediverse. "It is this torrent of spammy stuff—what some have taken to calling “slop”—that none of us can opt out of on today’s Internet. There is no toggle that allows us to turn off A.I.-generated content in our feeds. There are no filters that sort out A.I.-generated junk the way e-mail in-boxes sift out spam." fediverse

When you ask AI startups about their path to profitability:

Crazy. The For You feed is the root cause for so many of the ills in social media. The idea that “AI slop” will be injected as a test in people’s feeds in the coming months is another reason why the fediverse is more important than ever.

@mike Saw a few folks starting to see this in their feeds and it's as creepy and terrifying as you think it is, especially when you don't know it's coming.

Is it just me? Anytime I see AI generated images used in articles or web pages I immediately think “lazy” Just use free stock art at least.

I'm delighted to report that the stuffed Mastodon toys have arrived at the German warehouse at @ravioli. The ones going to the US warehouse are still in customs. I imagine we'll open the store once both have arrived, unless US customs takes unreasonably long...

I wrote about why Meta is integrating Threads with Mastodon and the fediverse -- and why advocates for an open social web are both cautiously intrigued and wary. washingtonpost.com/politics/20

I want to thank Mastodon founder @Gargron for taking the time to comment for my story on Threads' fediverse integration. Here's what he had to say:

@willoremus There’s a strong sense that Meta is going to follow the “Embrace, extend, and extinguish” path that Microsoft and other tech giants have previously used when they adopt open platforms or protocols.

I don’t think that’s their goal at all here. At their core, Meta is built around collecting personal data and then leveraging that to target people with ads. They don’t need to control the platform, they just need to be able to vacuum up the data.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that Meta would rather *not* control the platform, since that means they’re responsible for *moderating* the platform, which they’ve repeatedly shown they’re not interested in doing well.

I’m sure absolution from moderation sounds like a win in Zuck’s mind.

Today I learned that Apple Air Pods Pro in noise cancelling mode perfectly cancels the clicking of a geiger counter. You would not know it was making a sound. I hope that this is not relevant to /your/ day.

Fuji bring back Superia X-tra 400 😢 I have only 3 left in the freezer, and ebay is not looking promising anymore.

@Gargron I used to shoot it allllll the time. Sad.

@Gargron Or the Pro 400h. I only have 6 left of that. 0 left of X-tra 400. 🥺

@Gargron ... I've looked for a possible replacement in comparison reviews and came across this...

That led me to look at what the 'new' Fuji 400 could be, and found this...

I get the feeling that Fuji's new 400 could be far different in formula to the old Superia line. If it's actually about scarcity or cost of chemicals to keep making Superia, then perhaps it won't be brought back... just replaced by rebranded Gold or UltraMax.

I really am begging organizations to stop using Facebook or Twitter as the only way they distribute information.

Please don't make me make an account to see information

@annaecook I just ran into the same problem yesterday. A local café had all their information including menus on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, so I immediately set it on my blacklist (= ResQ Club will no longer send me notifications about leftover food they sell for cheap in the afternoon/evening). Obviously they don't want my business, so they're not getting it. *shrug*

Aurin Azadî

@annaecook I'd like to add: Please give us at least an RSS feed. If you don't want to don't want to discuss with us anyway, someone will create a bot to send the RSS content into the Fediverse.

@annaecook and Instagram… so many businesses these days run on an Instagram account

A friend of mine suggested that we stop using the sparkle ✨ emoji as the symbol for AI and replace it with a magic eight ball 🎱 as it more realistically conveys how the technology works. I've been thinking about that a lot lately. 😂
