@Gargron Didnβt realize you were a KX person! First camera I got when I was 11, will also be my last film camera :) Love the look of that nifty 50 @Gargron Iβm new to Mastodon and Pixelfed. I assume you created this post on Pixelfed, right? How did you manage to display it on Mastodon? I understand there is the same protocol under the hood. However, this is what confusing: I canβt see my Pixelfed post on Mastodon and I canβt see my comment to this post (from Mastodon) on Pixelfed. I thought they all be synced. I Always wanted to find a replacement for instagram, this is a good chance. Thank you. google ai LOVES to step in when it sees βvsβ and will try its hardest to compare whatever you throw at it

@jon@social.vivaldi.net The rise of Mastodon has made me so much more aware of government services requiring us to use private companiesβ systems to communicate with them and access services. Sitting on a Dutch train just now I was shown on a screen βfeeling unsafe in the train? Contact us via WhatsAppβ. What if I donβt use WhatsApp? (I do, but I wish I didnβt have to) Iβm forced to share my data with Meta to use it. Public systems should not require use of private services.

@Brendanjones i still love the confused look on peopleβs faces when i say ββ¦ but iβm not on Facebookβ¦β What is the alternative though? I mean for this specific "feeling unsafe in the train" case? When you need to reach wide audience and especially people who might be contacting you one and only time you have to use something popular already. On the camping grounds at #ArcTanGent. π· Pentax KX

Itβs trivial to resubscribe when you need to. You donβt need it right now. Cancel it.

@drahardja my personal way of doing subscriptions: I cancel them just after signing up. Fuck that. Don't resubscribe. They should pay you to watch their drivel. But since they won't the least you can do is turn on your VPN and torrent like it's 2009. Never had any streaming subscriptions in my entire life π A mathematician uses first person plural in proofs to suggest to the reader that they are on a journey together. This is not dissimilar to Virgil guiding Dante through the Inferno.

@ProfKinyon Did you the know of the Poul Anderson Novel 'Operation Chaos' in which the protagonists are led through a literal non-Euclidean version of hell by the spirits of the mathematicians Bolyai and Lobachevsky? Huh, I always thought of this usage of "we" being akin to how "you" and "they" can be either singular or plural, while I, he, she, it, and thou are strictly singular. Every once in a while, I catch Bruno chilling next to his portrait, but every time I reach for my phone he splits. Today he decided to stick around long enough to get this. The portrait was finger painted in ink by my daughter for a school art project. @fj There don't seem to be any articles on this outside the WSJ (yet?), and the lead paragraphs visible over the paywall are heavily caveated with "potentially" and "might" so it is still unclear what was actually breached. This could be something serious, or it could just be Chinese teen hackers able to submit unverified wiretap requests for "Deez Nutz" which are ignored. It is currently the silly season for generating political drama, so use appropriate skepticism until more details emerge. @fj this whole incident just makes it obvious why those systems should not exist in the first place.

This reminds me in the 90's when users in the UK couldn't sign up for AOL if they lived in the naughty worded counties like Essex or Sussex. How times have clearly not changed.
