Made the first release of Finwe, a high-level language for the Uxn VM (formerly Bureaucrat): github.com/kiedtl/finwe

I wanted to do more polishing before making a release, especially with regards to unit tests, but realized that if I waited it'd never happen in any capacity.

So, here it is.

So, what's next?

I had wanted to create a Tcp device for Varvara for a while, so I'll probably do just that, and maybe work on a simple Gemini/IRC client to test it out. It'll give me another chance to work on Uxn GUIs.

Ramsey Nasser

@unlkfp compiler enforced stack safety is something ive wondered about a lot and its *very* exciting to see a practical implementation!

@typeswitch I try very hard to avoid language development, after having spent many years trying to avoid language development by doing language development (mu).

Did we anchor right in the float plane runway? yes we did. FUCKING GO AROUND

Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar

@neauoire Is it a Canadair goose? Everyone in Greeced warned us to pay attention to the marked water scooping areas on the charts and stay the fuck away from them during wildfire season.

They will not hit you, but they are a) crazy good at their job and b) possibly a little actual crazy and c) will go out of their way to scare you into never doing it again by flying as close as possible to your rig without actually touching it. Or maybe high-five your VHF antenna.

spooky blip 👻

@neauoire uhhhhhhhhhhhh

I did this by *accident* last year in Nanaimo and had the Nanaimo Port Police waking me up at 6am telling me the area was a charted aerodrome and even extending a foot into it was a navigational hazard, and that I had to move immediately. They were nice about it, but made clear that the yellow box on the chart was a no-go zone.

I personally wouldn't want to play chicken with a high velocity craft's runway, but y'all do you 😂

"Some have described the 3x+1 problem as a Soviet conspiracy to slow down American mathematics since so many people tried working on it, tempted by its apparent simplicity." haha

@neauoire aka Collatz conjecture / Hailstone numbers: my favourite math problem!

A boat hailed on the radio was called Mah-na Mah-na, I'm quite sure that we're not the only ones now cursing them stuck with that stupid song in their heads.

Avi Bryant

@neauoire mah-na mah-na mah-na mah-na mah-na this is da doo doo, da doo doo, da doo doo, dah doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo

So, @capital uses "necrotic" as opposed to bitrot, because bitrot implies things have been left to decay but software necrosis is rotting while alive and maintained.

jon ⚝

@neauoire
A better amd .ore fitting term than enshittification
@capital

Capital

@neauoire There is also a part of me that felt rot wasn't the right term because rot is a natural part of a healthy ecosystem. Things come and go. Necrosis however kills. It's not consuming the dead and recycling its components, but bringing something to its death.

@neauoire *Watches Prometheus*

Rek: "WHY the hell didn't they pick an older actor in Prometheus for Peter Weyland... aging a young actor is strange, the makeup is not good. It really doesn't have to be the same person."
Dev: "I guess they need the actor to play a younger version of Peter Weyland in a sequel?"

*Watches Covenant. Young Peter Weyland is only on screen for 10 minutes*

:angy:

stiblu

@rek @neauoire its still not much more of him, but originally there was a 7 minute TED-Talk in Prometheus from young Peter Wayland. But it didn't survive the cut. But it is available online, if you are interested!

Devine Lu Linvega

Spent 2 hours watching the awful Aliens: Covenant movie.
Spent 8 amazing hours complaining about it with @rek during our sail from Desolation Sound.

xinniw

@neauoire @rek sometimes a bad movie can be even more fun than a good one 'cause you get to kvetch about it with your friends. My partner and I are always quoting roadhouse at each other because of this.

We are again in familiar waters, with their familiar weather radio voices, tugboats, madronas, lean little swallows, cormorants, banana slugs and extremely bitter IPAs. We wake up and it's still dark out, summer must be slipping away; the sun looks all burnt up, red and angry against the morning fog. The music aboard is changing to an appropriate shoegaze, as if to match the sound of rustling of leaves and wind wailing through the shrouds.

Tuba is an excellent fediverse client, I wish I had come across it before.

@neauoire memory hungry though. I'm not sure if it knows when to stop eating RAM.

But overall pretty great, I agree

Threw firefox in the proverbial garbage bin, switched to ESR, 52 weeks until it gets polluted with AI shit, I can delay having to really deal with this problem for a bit, I feel like dancing

@neauoire Does ESR 128 contain the "ad measurement" feature?

(It's in "normal 128" but I've read sometimes experimental features are not included in ESR, and although there is nothing to indicate it in the UI, Mozilla claims "ad measurement" is experimental.)

Myles Lewando

@neauoire I switched to LibreWolf and couldn't be happier.

Finally have reliable internet fast enough to update distro packages.
Update Firefox 120.1 -> 130.0
"HURRAY! FIREFOX NOW FINALLY COMES WITH A AI CHATBOT"
Instant regret.

@neauoire one day you'll go off grid and when you reconnect the ai will just download itself

Tim Lavoie

@neauoire I wonder how hard it would be to just keep a local source repo, that you can rebuild as needed with your preferred configuration.

Daruma

@neauoire ahhh that’s terrible. I feel like every piece of popular software is just tossing one in. The windows computer I use for work has 3 chatbots that must be defeated each time I want to do anything. If I want a chatbot, I’ll use a chatbot app thank you very much.

Arrived in Silva Bay to see 4 boats sunken, only their masts are sticking out..

Devine Lu Linvega

Sometimes I wonder, between not ever seeing any sailors under the age of sixty, and marinas falling into disrepair and no new ones being built. I wonder how many years is left to this whole thing before it's just.. something of the past, like zeppelins.

Ruben

@neauoire and that was only the 4 you could see

Devine Lu Linvega

A sailing club is coming out of Pender Arbor just as we're going past, we're surrounded with sails, there's a cool morning breeze carrying us all south, it's utterly quiet even tho there's boats all around. It's fantastic.

If these zines weren't enough, more can be found on the No Trace Project's website. Some older zines, especially those about internet technologies, can be rather outdated, so read older material with a bit extra skepticism.
