In the past 2 years or so that I've been on the Fediverse, I've been following people because I enjoy reading what they have to say, and want to keep up with their posts. I've seen many other people apparently doing this too.

I have just now been told authoritatively and forcefully that this is not OK and never has been OK, and that follows are intended only for personal friends.

Is that true? When did this happen? Did I snooze during that part of the orientation? Did I miss a meeting?

@bamfic @cwebber @darius @wakest who said that? I send out new follows all the time because I think people are interesting, and I want to see what else they have to say. If an account is set to manually approve follow requests, and I have to wait for an approval, that's totally fine.
