It's that time of year where I occasionally remind the world of the existence of this cursed bit of generative music I made years ago: Endless Jingling, which mashes up a random selection of three of four different carols on each reload, jumping randomly between measures of each ad infinitum.

You'll need to click to make it make sound. I'm sorry in advance.

@joshmillard This is completely cursed. I’m gonna share it with everyone I know.

Another test on another piece of soapstone scrap. Attempting something trickier to see just how tricky it is and what sort of logistical issues come into pulling it off: carving two independent, interlocking pieces from the same block.

Happy to have pulled it off at a basic level—didn’t break either piece—and definitely needing to think hard about planning and process if I want something cleaner and less lopsided than ovoid chain links.

I was constrained significantly by the piece of scrap I was working with being fairly narrow on one dimension, but as a result I made getting the two links cleanly apart more difficult than I imagined it might be. Visualizing the spatial relationship with the two rings ahead of time did not come entirely naturally, and having them lay on a close diagonal made carving out the space between much trickier than it needed to be I think.

Reddit decided the thing to do to distract from all the anger at the site and at u/spez for the recent Reddit API horseshit etc. was to do a fun community collaborative drawing thing and, well

@joshmillard Not *entirely* related but I'm still confused: if people are using this much energy to hate on spez, what's keeping them from leaving the platform and moving on? Is it the communities?

The only reason Reddit is still relevant is because people are still holding onto it. Same for other platforms like birdsite.

Alys

@joshmillard I'm so glad to see a community band together like this.

MetaFilter turned 24 years old yesterday! Literal 20th century cultural icon. Here's an incomprehensible birthday thread full of riffing:

metafilter.com/199973/Happy-bi

And more thoughtful and coherent thread of memories and gratitude from folks on the site:

The site has been such a uniquely big part of my life, for almost that entire stretch, that i find myself sort of overwhelmed with a complicated mix of feelings when the big day rolls around, but the ultimate throughline there is that I'm grateful for it and for all the people it's brought into my life, and glad as fuck that it's plowing on into the future, year by year and day by day. There's no where else quite like it, and we need more places like it on the internet.

@joshmillard 24?! Metafilter needs to stop mooching off its parents, move out and get a real job 👀

I want to add sone context (or really subtract some inferred context) from my recent toots about corporate social media: I’m saying this stuff on mastodon as someone who likes masto but it’s not masto evangelism. My argument is not “…so everyone should join the fediverse.” I don’t want half a billion people here. I don’t want half a billion people in any one place. That’s too much. It doesn’t work.

Masto is fine, it isn’t gonna replace Twitter, I don’t want it to, and it’s not overtly scummy.

Josh "cortex" Millard

And it’s really really possible to care only that much about it. Masto is okay, and it’s ethics aren’t transparently super fucked and extractive from the word go. It’s a low bar, masto clears it, lots of smaller sites and online communities clear it, and *none* of the hyper capitalist VC/SV/entrepreneur platforms do.

Growth for growth’s sake, scale without guard rails or fundamental ethical boundaries, is bad, period. It’s about the most literal a version of metaphorical cancer you can get.

Future tense: i will CROSS the street
Present continuing tense: I am CROSSING the street
Past tense: I CROSSED the street
Pastry tense: I have CROISSANT the street

@joshmillard There's a short story in a book of "let's play with language" bits I have that is written entirely in the future pluperfect tense. "He would have been going to the store when he would have been crossing the street...."

AceOfWaggery

@joshmillard Dude, you're too tense, you need another croissant.

saw a cute tiktok where somebody was like "i'm gonna do affirmations by staring at myself in the mirror and saying the things I say to my cat" and it's a great concept in theory but i'm not gonna improve my self image by locking eyes with myself and saying "why did you poop on the floor"

mhoye

@joshmillard Step 1 is admitting you have a problem.
