Irish ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช #geoweirdness, secrets strange and bold,
across the isle, an odd tale to be told.
Cork to Donegal,
we'll unveil it all -
in this thread, the story will unfold.

1/

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

2. First of all, some clarification on terms: Ireland is an island in the north Atlantic.

The island is divided between the country Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช (ร‰ire in Irish, and
sometimes referred to as the "Republic of Ireland" or simply "the Republic") and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง.

One on-going project here at OpenCage HQ has been to expose more of our internal tools and utilities.

Need to find the distance between two pairs of coordinates?
opencagedata.com/tools/distanc

Harry Wood

@opencage You could make it linkable somehow. Dynamically update a hash in the URL containing the two coords.
I was recently realising I should do the same for my similar calculator tool: harrywood.co.uk/other/linear-t

Time for #fridaygeotrivia, this toot start the thread.

Once again our question revolves around country chains. But this time we consider the attribute of GDP per capita. ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ

What is the longest chain of countries such that each successive country in the chain shares a land border with and has a higher GDP per capita than the previous country?

Example: Portugal ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น - Spain ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ - France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท - Andorra ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฉ

blog.opencagedata.com/post/geo

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

As always you must include the #fridaygeotrivia hashtag, emoji flags of the countries.

We are using the CIA estimate of GDP/capita (because they have an estimate for every country and territory)

See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

Don't forget !!! #fridaygeotrivia trivia later today!

The question goes up at 18:00 Berlin ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช time, 5pm London ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง, 1 pm New York ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ.

Who among you will take home the coveted emoji trophy ๐Ÿ†?

๐Ÿšจ Reminder - #fridaygeotrivia is this week ๐Ÿšจ

We will play on ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Friday, 3rd of November at 18:00 Berlin ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช time, 5pm London ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง, 1 pm New York ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ.

Recently a follower who enjoys our #geoweirdness threads challenged us to create such a thread for Luxembourg ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡บ.

Challenge accepted!

Join us for a look at the geographic oddities of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

1/

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

2/ First up, Luxembourg ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡บ is a constitutional monarchy headed up by a Grand Duke. It is a last remnant of a time when central Europe was a patchwork of tiny fiefdoms.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_du

Long-time followers will recall we asked about "non-kingdom monarchies" as our March 2023 #fridaygeotrivia question.

It's only a few days until Oct. 3rd, German "Day of Unity", a holiday in Germany ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช celebrating reunification.

A fitting reason for us to make Germany the focus if this week's #geoweirdness thread

1/n

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

2/ Located in the center of Europe, the area we today refer to as Germany ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช is a natural crossroads, and the borders and political geography has changed A LOT over the centuries. Material enough for many threads, but today we'll focus on modern bits of #geoweirdness

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿšจ Here we go! ๐Ÿšจ The #fridaygeotrivia question: What is the longest chain of countries, such that each country shares a land border with and has a shorter name than the previous country?

Ex: Luxembourg ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡บ (10 chars) Belgium ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช (7) France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท (6) Spain ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ (5).

- you must include the hashtag #fridaygeotrivia and emoji flags

- spaces in the name count as a char. Ex: โ€œSouth Africaโ€ (12)

- โ€œThe โ€œ at start of the name does not count. Ex: โ€œNetherlandsโ€ (11) not โ€œThe Netherlandsโ€ (15)

Don't forget: #fridaygeotrivia is back this Friday (29th) at 18:00 Berlin ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช, 5pm London ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง, 12 noon New York ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ time.

See you then!

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ After taking last month off for a summer break #fridaygeotrivia - our geo trivia game played on the final Friday of the month - returns! We will play this ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Friday (29th) at 18:00 Berlin ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช, 5pm London ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง, 12 noon New York ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ time.

Best way to prepare is to quiz yourself with past questions, which you can find over on the blog: blog.opencagedata.com/tagged/f

See you here on Friday!

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

Many will play #fridaygeotrivia, but only one can raise the coveted emoji trophy ๐Ÿ†

We will see who of the regulars used the summer to diligently train and who wasted it. cc: @AtanasE @ccferrie @matt_travis @amapanda @VictimOfMaths @arferrand @gravitystorm @ryankas @puntofisso

1/ Time for this week's #geoweirdness thread.

For the first time in our series we turn our focus to the Arab world. Join us as we look at the geographic oddities of the United Arab Emirates ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ช

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

2/ The United Arab Emirates ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ช is often referred to as "The UAE", making it one of the few countries commonly referred by its initials.

Others are the US ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ, the UK ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง, and PNG ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฌ

#geoweirdness

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

People seem to like controversy, so for this week's #geoweirdness thread we thought weโ€™d post about a very contentious geo topic we often get asked about: disputed borders.

1/n

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

2/ More borders around the world than you might think are disputed.

Sometimes between countries, sometimes within countries, for example regions that want independence. Each case is unique with its own history and cultural context.

But how should our geocoding API handle this?

#geoweirdness

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

September is going to a very big month for Geomob, the geospatial event series and podcast we organize, so we thought we'd make it the topic of this week's geothread.

In the next four weeks there will be Geomob events in London ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง, Barcelona ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ, Berlin ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช, and Lisbon ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น

So what is Geomob?

1/n

#geomob

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

2/ The goal of Geomob is to provide a relaxed, informal forum for anyone doing anything interesting related to geospatial to share their project.

Could be start-ups, hobbyists, academics, big cos, govt bodies, museums, anyone. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ’ฐ

Our motto: โ€œGeoinnovation - for fun or profitโ€œ

The last few weeks our weekly threads have been about OpenStreetMap, but this week we get back to #geoweirdness

Join us as we consider the geographic oddities of the Republic of Poland ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ

1/n

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

2/ At first glance you might think Poland ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ does not have much #geoweirdness

The country has no exclaves or overseas territories.

Indeed, Poland is the 9th most rectangular country (Egypt ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฌ is first):

pappubahry.com/misc/rectangles

but there are a few bits of oddness

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

After a week off to enjoy the summer this week's #geoeducation thread again focuses on OpenStreetMap

The OpenStreetMap community is massive (and growing) ๐Ÿ’ช, global ๐ŸŒ, and very dynamic ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿ’ƒ!

The OSM database has millions of edits per day. Lots of things are happening all the time. But ... that can also be a bit overwhelming. How do we stay aware of what's happening?

#OpenStreetMap

1/n

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

2/ First up you read/subscribe to the OSM weekly, a volunteer-run, weekly digest with a broad overview OSM news available in many different languages: @weeklyOSM

weeklyosm.eu

Bonus points: you can (should!) also submit OSM news

#OpenStreetMap

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

This month OpenStreetMap - the global crowdsourced open geodata project - celebrates its 19th birthday ๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽ‰, so the next few weeks our #geoeducation threads will focus on the amazing OSM community.

Our geocoding API is built on OpenStreetMap, and for many years now we've been interviewing OpenStreetMap communities small and large over on our blog.

Join us on a virtual trip to see how OSM works around the world ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ

2/ One of coolest things about OpenStreetMap is that the world is such a geographically and culturally diverse place, and yet we all contribute to the same open database.

Sounds obvious, but really how many examples of truly global cooperation are there?

Time for this week's geothread, a dose of #geoeducation rather than #geoweirdness

Today we thought we'd cover a common geocoding use case: extracting the coordinates from images ๐Ÿ“ธ and geocoding the location the image was taken.

1/n

OpenCage ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸŒ

2/ When you take a picture by default most digital cameras record all sort of meta info, and store that data in the resulting image file.

Things like type of camera, exposure time, etc.

This is known as "EXIF data". Exif stands for "Exchangeable image file format"

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif

Name countries (or parts of countries) that use the postal system of other countries.

An example: Liechtenstein ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฎ uses the Swiss ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ postal system.

As always you need the emoji flag and #fridaygeotrivia hashtag for full points.
