noticing a difference in the type of replies I am getting to posts that I address to lemmy. the reddit influx comes with a certain type of replyguy entering the fedi that I havent been around much in recent years Beehaw (one of the largest Lemmy servers) has been down for over 7 hours now. https://hachyderm.io/@beehaw/110687918465426082 ATTENTION LEMMY ADMINS: XSS VULNERABILITY NEEDS PATCHING Details: Lemmy.world was hacked and most Lemmy servers are still vulnerable to the exploit: [posted also to @fediverse] @liaizon @fediverse I only joined a few days ago. I suppose this means I have to alter my password? vlemmy.net with 4500 users has disappeared without any notice, does anyone know who the admin was? Yea ... I heard. Luckily not too much personal stuff is stuck on a lemmy instance (right?). Still, this has happened before and will happen again. By now, it's just a bit too sub-par to have totally mysterious unreachable admins. Some sort of "protocol" should become a bit more normal. At least, all admins should have an account on some other instance/platform that they can use to communicate with. Berlin fediverse hack night at https://offline.place :fediverse: on Wednesday, July 12th at 18:00 Come hangout with @carlschwan, @adz and myself, we will look at some APIs, read some FEPs and drink some drinks

@liaizon @carlschwan @adz is it a one-time thing or do you think you will repeat it probably next wednesday? I am out of town right now still thinking about what an ACAB protocol would look like. Something in the same vain as the Anticapitalist License with some viral abilities like AGPL. It could be attached to blocks of content itself like a <rel="me"> tag the fediverse comments plugin for Jekyl that @cassidy is working on looks amazing! this is the type of integration we need more of! https://cassidyjames.com/blog/fediverse-blog-comments-mastodon/ @liaizon But of course. You must have faith in your god, The Recommender System, and accept everything that it force-feeds you in its infinite wisdom. I read that as “you can’t prevent individual people on other instances from following your (public) account”. It seems like an entirely reasonable thing to point out to users of Instagram, who are used to how things work there. Last night I spoke at https://offline.place to a full room about the fediverse. It went super well, this weird side of the internet has a profound cultural relevance and I think that shined thru. After my rant and a bunch of smart questions were asked, the night continued with @adz giving an introduction of @p2panda and concepts surrounding it like offline-first. Afterwards we all ate and drank and continued many threads of discussion late into the night. A big shout out to @computersandblues @nick @erikkemp @skyeye @miel @schokopflaster and @vylion for responding to my post yesterday asking for ways we can talk about this place. It filled my head with ideas and helped direct the discussions! numbers games are quite insane... MrBeast posted on Threads 13 hours ago and the post has 78,000 replies already https://www.threads.net/t/CuXrpemRV3m @liaizon The draw that celebrities have is crazy. But you know what else? They wouldn’t even sniff at the new platform if there wasn’t money to be made. I’ve already had friends of mine who run small businesses ask me what “potential” Threads has for promoting their business. Mr Beast is the same. He’s probably contracted to sign up / use it / promote it for a certain amount of time and - call me cynical - but he’ll only stick around if there’s money to be made (directly or indirectly). designer of the Threads logo Jez Burrows: @liaizon Every time I see the logo, I can’t help but also see the little stink-curls wafting off it. @liaizon @wikipedia me, literally born in Ghana: "How the f have I never heard of this guy before?" Thanks for introducing him to me :) Check in with your admins and server operators and make sure your instance is upgraded! "Using carefully crafted media files, attackers can cause Mastodon's media processing code to create arbitrary files at any location" https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/security/advisories/GHSA-9928-3cp5-93fm bbc news gives a totally meaningless lens to look at the Meta Threads issue as a "fight" between Musk and Zuck and totally leaves out how that affects the actual humans who are using these kingdoms 30 million Instagram users already signed up on Threads according to Zuckerberg, they could have more active users then Twitter by next week... I think we are underestimating the severity of this move...

@liaizon a non chronological feed full of people you didn't choose to follow it's bold move |
@liaizon reddit was... always kind of an efficient machine for producing those
@liaizon That is largely my experience with Reddit. I didn't use it as a social platform, but as a limited-use forum for gaming. Even then it's a ton of mental filtering to separate the wheat from the chaff, like hot takes and people who don't bother to search before they post. BUT some people would post valuable info that isn't available anywhere else. Sometimes. Now Reddit is twitterating and I am hoping Lemmy isn't going to become Reddit, Part Two.
