@vkc I mostly use nowadays
news.ycombinator.com/
lobste.rs/
dev.to/ (I find it more useful than reddit.com/ for dev informations) and mastodon (following users and specific tags)

I find nowadays little to no useful information straight from google search) and I'm surprised that somebody tries to do so

@vkc
I concur. Internet corporations make for walled gardens, gate-keeping, and rent-seeking. Which are are among the reasons why I’m so keen on #Wikipedia & #Tor. (Hosting my own server or instance is another project for another day.)

@vkc god I'm so thankful I found you out here in the internet wild, been quietly despairing of learning things fast enough before they make internet learning impossible

Humans invented art 40,000 years before we invented money

We’ve never needed monetary motivation to do beautiful things

and we never will

@robinhood Not only do humans make art when there is no chance of receiving money for doing so, they make art when it is literally *illegal* to do so. Humans will risk jail or even death to keep making art.

Floating Point Error

@robinhood or doing deliberately ugly and meaningless things no one could pay for even in the presence of money!

The #ThinkPad t520. It’s in very good condition for its age. Only needed minimal cleaning. As far as upgrades go, 16GB of RAM and a replacement battery are first up. The current one is about 44% degraded. After that, a 1600x900 display panel and an i7 quad core are next. I’ll probably upgrade the WiFi card at some point also. I’m loving this thicc machine so much.

@68000 you can install Ivy Bridge CPUs on Sandy Bridge models afaik. But you need Coreboot-based firmware to get microcode for CPUs.

:blobcatlaptop: gravitos :blobcatcomfsip:

@68000 you can put an LTE modem into these, its a very good addition for those who are always on the move! i've personally put this one into mine!

Switzerland now requires all government software to be open source zdnet.com/article/switzerland- by @sjvn

Switzerland is one of the world's leading #opensource countries; now, if only the United States could follow its lead!

@sjvn

That is very nice if Switzerland and any other country doing it realizes that open source programmers need to eat and pay bills. 🧐

Comming from a government with huge piles of cash inside the country sounds more like reduce costs with free labor. 😒

Oh the buts: "... the law not only allows the release of OSS by the Swiss government or its contractors, but also requires the code to be released under an open-source license "UNLESS the RIGHTS of THIRD PARTIES or SECURITY-RELATED REASONS would EXCLUDE or RESTRICT this."

@sjvn why am I this bothered by the fact that there is an Y instead of a Z between the T and U keys on that keyboard?

Какая "Неожиданность" (нет), оказалось, что #Chome и #Chomebased браузеры имеют неотлючаемый шпионский код. :blobcatfacepalm:

"Код, отвечающий за такое поведение, существует около десяти лет . Google подтвердил его наличие и отсутствие возможности отключения."

there should be a TorDB site listing various online services and how well they function over the #Tor network. Think ProtonDB, but for websites. The more capthas and borked features, the lower the rating

at worst that would be a fun way to dunk on sites hostile towards Tor users, at best - a way to hold them accountable

@stella If you keep breathing, you are accepting that all your material property belongs to me.

You see? You don't have to do something just because I say something. That's not how real life works.

i don’t even need to hear from the EFF to have a good argument why adshit shouldn’t run on my computers

the argument is: it’s my computer

no seriously. are they paying me for the use of my computer to run their adshit? no? then it doesn’t need to run on my computer.

that shit is for me, not doubleclick or whatever the bloody thing is called now. if it ain’t making me happy or bringing me money, it’s out

@ariadne Dingdingding, we have a winner. This 💯

EFF's "privacy badger" extension today expanded its effects on your Chrome settings to disable the Google "Ad Sandbox". This disables not just Topics (the worst of Ad Sandbox's features so far) but also the other two features— including "Ad Measurement", a feature that Apple copied a couple years back and Firefox adopted as an "experiment" this month.

mastodon.social/@eff/112831156

The EFF here succinctly argues why all of these ad features should not be running on your computer:

@mcc @lisamelton Reason no 48419375729 not to ever use google browsers. Any.

@mcc so privacy sandbox isn't private at all 🤷‍♀️

liebach 🏳️‍🌈

@mcc Oh, I had read about Google war against 3rd party cookies, and how that was just to protect their own business, but hadn't made the connection to the latest Firefox change.

honestly maybe we should stop pushing for memory safety to make it impossible for corporations to secure their shit

fun fact: if you have a laptop or desktop that has an intel cpu with "vPro" on the sticker there's a chance the management engine in your CPU is just hosting a web server at all times.

It's at port 16992

@i_lost_my_bagel You could note that this is totally opt-in in OEM BIOS configurations. Plus it requires support in the chipset + BIOS.

The Dell machines I used it on needed to have it flipped in the boot screen first. You can get them preconfigured too, though.

It's a PERFECT solution for a home server. It's a free BMC! 😍 One just needs to know about this and configure it properly. I don't think there's any consumer grade CPUs or consumer grade motherboard that have vPro.

@i_lost_my_bagel @alfredohno Fun fact, this is why some of my workstations have additional cheap PCIe NICs in them.

AMT is disabled but it keeps listening to the ports on the built-in NIC forever (intercepts them so the OS never sees traffic), so I assume it is still compromised and I simply cannot use the built-in NIC in those workstations.

@i_lost_my_bagel This may be a fun time to also bring up Microsoft #Pluton, which may or may not be a part of this same shady infrastructure; the latest and greatest processors have it in addition to the IME/PSP.

(It has a valid overt use case in securing a user's preferred cryptographic keys, but it can just as easily be used to eg. lock stuff out of the user's control.)
