Variants of hikikomori really can be spotted in all highly developed, complex societies. It certainly *may* be because of alienation in the Marxist sense of the term, but that is what must be studied by sociologists, social psychologists, etc. since cause-and-effect isn’t always perfectly clear at the level of society itself.
