@darius def remember that jingle. this sent me down a gum commercial rabbit hole that led to Big League Chew, the chewing gum from hell itself https://youtube.com/watch?v=BCawfG0CFvo @darius Hilariously, before I actually went and played it, you know what immediately sprang to mind for me? The Mentos theme! I guess they are filed next to each other in my head

@darius "the second Great Vowel Shift started, as far as we can determine, from a single 'toot' by a noted jester of the era" oh right google changed all their icons so I have no idea what tab gmail is open in anymore @darius yeah. its sucky. and its not even just learning new icon because with all of their icons having the same colors a key part of my processing ability is taken away. There's a little-noticed mistake in the recording for "Zombie" by The Cranberries where in the pre-chorus the lead singer sings "and their bombs" twice! I fixed it so you can hear the song the way it was intended. You're welcome!

@darius Maybe it's because I'm used to the other version but this really throws off my sense of the rhythm @darius I noticed it, but I never knew what to make of it. I didn't know it was considered a mistake. I feel a little bit like a medieval serf when I think about restaurants. The idea of sitting down in a place and having people come and bring you food cooked to order while you carry on conversing with your compatriots seems like an experience reserved for kings and their court Just FYI, a bunch of my bots and sites are down right now due to a planned data center migration. This includes https://tinysubversions.com They should be back up within, oh, 6 hours or so depending on how this migration goes. @darius I was curious what Too Much Not Enough was, so I clicked on the link and then immediately went "oh that was stupid" lol

@darius This whole time I thought the Uncanny Valley was a visual thing. Weird how pasting in some short text snippets pushes it to the deepest depths ever encountered. How is it that Gboard on Android seems to remember every typo I've ever made and suggests them constantly but also forgets my last name every month or so? I have absolutely no working mental model of how it retains information, whereas Swype (RIP) worked consistently and exactly as expected, even when it was a little annoying. What I'm saying is I miss Swype. (I still have it, it's just corporate abandonware now) Mine forgets my name too. I have it set up to suggest in both German and English which can be amusing. When it makes a mistake, the usual response is "Damn you autocarrot". It has not learned autocarrot very well but I am trying to teach it. The real challenge is writing when the suggested word is never the one you pick. I really do want to have distinctive writing and not just words that can easily appear from a typing machine. Improve your prose by never taking suggestions! @darius where the ghosts all drive old British cars (and are thus often late for haunting people due to mechanical problems and breakdowns) @darius Haunting of BL Manor is exactly the kind of thing I would spend 60 hours playing Pleased to announce that, for the first time in ~20 years of using Debian and/or Ubuntu, I remembered the command "lsb_release -a", for finding out what version of the OS I am running, without having to look it up.

@darius For those used to Python, I will often run `python -m platform` to do something similar. I love this lidar scan of an archive room at the Centro de Henri Lenaerts in Navarra, Spain (an arts organization). But it makes me heartsick for visiting archives in person :( A year ago I wrote this article on how to be a tourist at library archives and it feels like another era... Did Ted Wheeler just say he would encourage the police to nazi? (no he said "not see" but it sounded funny) (Mayoral debate here: https://kgw.com/embeds/video/283-1393698/iframe?jwsource=cl ) The absolute worst thing about Dependabot is when I'm following someone else's repo and I get spammed with dependabot PRs. Like it's not even my project, come on!!! |
