@exstral FYI I hope to integrate some of your changes, finally, in the next Hometown version we release I have just released Hometown v1.0.5+3.5.2! No new features, just bringing things up to parity with the latest Mastodon v3.5.2. Lots of cool new features thanks to their team and contributors, though. We will have some Hometown tweaks/fixes/features coming soon though! https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown/releases/tag/v1.0.5%2B3.5.2

@darius @darius First Hometown migration went smoothly -- excited to try it out! I do think the "Initial migration" wiki still mentions 3.4.6 in a few spots though. I don't think GitHub lets me submit PRs on the wiki though :/ Hello fediverse, just testing federated messaging post-upgrade over here on Friend Camp.

Rest in peace Dave Walden. He was an early ARPANET and Internet pioneer and Iwas incredibly helpful to me when I set out to blog about the first 365 RFCs. A kind and funny man. Obituary: https://www.olsonparent.com/obituary/David-Walden His wonderful website: https://walden-family.com/dave/ The book he edited on the history of BBN: https://walden-family.com/bbn/ He was also an important figure in the TeX community: https://walden-family.com/texland/ I wanted to visit him very much but covid got in the way of that. I'm very sad I'll never get to meet him in person. I've got a new blog post up at Meedan (where I work). It's about longform git commits: what they are and how they can make your life as a software developer easier. My spiciest git take is you should ban "-m" from your git repertoire and go full verbose invoking a text editor from the CLI to write commits. https://meedan.com/blog/how-to-write-longform-git-commits-for-better-software-development/

@darius Great stuff! Magit, the Emacs Git client, actually has verbose commit messages as the default which is one way it encourages good practice, it seems. Idea: game with a leaderboard that always says you're the best player in the world no matter what your score is. It's a subjective, supportive leaderboard.

@darius it might generate random competition by placing a fictionary player above you, which you then automatically beat later on and receive a badge. If you run a #hometown server and would like to be added to the list of servers on the wiki, please let me know! (or add it yourself if you like but you need a github account) The idea is to help people find Hometown servers to go to, and to help me get a sense of what kind of communities are using my software. https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown/wiki/Hometown-servers

[DATA EXPUNGED]
I'm pleased to note that even https://dolphin.town, my Mastodon server where the only letter you are allowed to post is "e", has seen increased activity in the last few days. Thanks Eeeeelon!

Elden Ring? Please. If I wanted to die in a game I would simply compete in a sporting event.

@darius I'm really happy that my son bought this for himself via Steam, so I can play it when he's not around :-) enough to tell me that I'm glad I didn't put down the money for myself! One of the joys of the fediverse is @tripofmice's monthly live blog of TeaTime Magazine, a magazine made for, well, mostly old lady tea enthusiasts @darius @tripofmice @darius @tripofmice tagging @delphijunkie b/c, well, b/c he's a "old lady tea enthusiast". #notsorry On Mastodon and #hometown, you can turn off boosts in the Home timeline by clicking the settings button at the top of the timeline. Not helpful if you're trying to find new accounts to follow, but if you're like me and want a chill timeline, it helps. You can also turn off boosts from individuals: go to their profile and click the three dots. This is useful if an individual is a bit spammy on the boosts. (This works on the web interface, not necessarily third party phone apps.)

@darius Darius, what is Hometown? Is it a fork of Masrodon, or something else altogether? @darius I love this global boost hiding feature. On birdsite I go through elaborate gyrations to block retweets on every single account I follow. Hey there's a new #hometown server for STS / critical tech folks, https://assemblag.es ! @mistertim is admin @darius @mistertim .es domains are such a blessing, 4 euros a year and so good for plural words @darius @mistertim AAah that's excellent, we needed one of those, cc @JulianOliver @darius @mistertim Dang I would like to somehow exist on two servers at once. Or I guess for cross-server groups to be a thing! A sincere tip for longtime fediverse people who would like their friends to stick around here longer than a week: If you're on Mastodon or Hometown, you can click the "bell" icon in the profile of someone you follow. This will make it so that every time they post, it will appear in your notifications like an "@". I am enabling this temporarily for friends so that I remember to interact with them. This is important for making this place feel more lively and helps people stick around!

@darius Great tip but in practice quite hard: Has mastodon dot online fixed their spam problem? I silenced them for a while, then I fully suspended them because it was just a nightmare and their admins seemed unresponsive to the problem, but that was a long time ago. I'm noticing people from Twitter joining them as one of the big generalist instances so I'm wondering if I should like... de-escalate them back to silenced so we can interact again. #fediblock |
