Has anyone made a DMs-only fediverse client? Like something that looks more or less like iMessage or Signal but you address people via their fediverse handles and it handles DMs as first class (and only-class) content?
Has anyone made a DMs-only fediverse *server*? Like if I want to join fedi but only to direct message people and be in group chats I could join a server and it would have a nice client view like the one in the previous paragraph?
born too late to do something you could only really do before you were born, born too soon to do something we speculate may be possible in the distant future past your estimated lifespan
I'm still hopeful that this whole "dying of the passage of time" won't be a thing soon-ish because all that ongoing longevity research will bear fruit sooner or later. Why now? Because now we're at the point when we've made enough progress in other areas that we can now build tools that allow reverse engineering biological systems like ourselves.
So I speculate that we were born at just the right time.
I think it would be quite humorous if Ernest, instead of being frightened into a stupor, were instead frightened into a state of extreme erudition and lucidity. My two cents. Thanks for reading.
Absolutely wild to me that there is a book called "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" where the censored word seems to imply the author does, in fact, extremely give a fuck especially about their relationship to their publisher and to their book's ability to be carried in stores
@darius I'd say that perhaps it's about how to selectively do that, rather than making it a person's whole lifestyle. After all, there are situations where it's important to give a f*ck.
The great clown Pagliacci and his son get in a car crash. It's terrible, Pagliacci dies instantly but the son is taken to the hospital. He is about to be operated on when the surgeon says, "I cannot operate on this person -- I am Pagliacci!"
@darius as anyone that actually read Mary Shelley’s work knows, Pagliacci is the name of the _clown car_. The driver has no name, or is simply referred to as Pagliacci’s driver. It is correct that a clown car cannot perform surgery, as it is lacking hands.
It seems that US Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and I are in agreement -- I have long claimed that the output of a bot is a speech act by its creator. If my bots say something shitty, that is on me. I think the creator of an AI should be liable for its outputs.
@darius@irwin Yet the output of a generative ML model isn’t copyrightable. It seems like, if this becomes precedent, holding a bot creator who uses generative tech to create the bot output is a wedge that could be used to pressure copyright for generative tech.
Which might not be desirable. Unless it’s a derivative work and the author owes royalties to holders of copyright on the training corpus?
@darius I was going to say that it would mean we are responsible for what our kids say, but then I remembered that these ai bots are not independent entities unlike our progeny so yes the corporations are liable.
@darius what a jaw dropping 50 year memorial, thanks for sharing! I forgot what an impression it made on me in my 20s--it would be fun to reread it now.
At work today I removed the `react-color` color picker widget library from our web app, which is 130kb of JS minified! You know what you can use instead of this in many cases?
Next episode of JoJo's Bizarre Explainer is out, covering the first two parts of the Steel Ball Run arc "A Silent Way", chapters 40 and 41! We discuss being stuck in a system where you don't even know who the real enemy is because you are too concerned with your own survival, and also there is a song about cheese.
@darius Thank you for that - I've gotten to hear a few DJ Screw tracks because I'm married to a Houstonian. I now want to make a mix tape anchored by this track and by the Chipmunks at 16rpm doing Blondie's "Call Me": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TU-MYe0SL9Q
I'm hearing Chris Bouzy has a new corporate social network site he is trying to start up, Spoutible.
My history with Bouzy is I know him to be the face of Bot Sentinel, a service that purports to automatically detect problematic Twitter accounts.
It does not work.
Bouzy claims it works because he defines his metrics of success as 'whatever Bot Sentinel says is problematic is problematic', which, cool tautology generator you built there. More criticism from me:

@darius One or two firms in the marketing side of the business have had some solid success with evidence-based detection of bot networks, keeping their heads slightly above water against the daily code changes written specifically to counter their detection tools. Platform and publisher sides of the business have been reluctant to use them on content because of expense. Not an easy problem to solve but industry can do much better.
These days my go-to example of "you cannot bet on having access to better technology as time progresses" is "I used to have an app on my phone that could predict the next hour of weather with startling accuracy and that is no longer an option"
(I am talking about Dark Sky)
Edited to add: I only want to hear suggestions for services/sites/apps if they offer the same ~10min interval microforecasts for the upcoming hour that Dark Sky used to, because that is the thing I am lamenting
New episode of JoJo's Bizarre Explainer just dropped over the weekend! We talk about Steel Ball Run chapters 38 and 39, and we confirm that stand users who wear their stand as clothing are probably just running around naked as far as most people can see.
@darius @liaizon This sounds like @supapp?
@darius @slims It’s called email. No need to reindent the wheel
@darius I read this as Dungeon Maters only.
