This is it, the last XOXO ever. Really proud of this launch lineup, and I love the website @ashur and @emicab made for it. So fun! xoxo.zone/@xoxo/11248071401403

Delighted and totally honored to be at XOXO this year, look at these absolute badasses who will be speaking, lordy, no pressure or anything 😬

This August I'm speaking at the last-ever XOXO Festival, revisiting my 2014 talk, "How I Won the Lottery"

@darius I occasionally reference this talk and analogy when describing my professional arc to high schoolers at career day (I am a high value career day target as a game dev married to a high school faculty member!). Excited to learn why, upon a decade of reflection, it is wrong to do that.

old man and the cbowns

@darius I still share the idea of your talk with people all the time. It’s such a joy

In the 90s there used to be a good comic book store in the basement off the alley behind this building. I learned it was also Steve Purcell’s local comic shop and that’s how I ended up meeting him (for an interview for my Sam & Max fansite 😎). Early and formative and totally lucky step on my road to having a career in games.

Amazon has, for some reason, changed the release date for the Lurking paperback from Feb 21, 2021 to....March 7, 7431
does this mean it plans to hold any orders for over FIVE THOUSAND years as preorders? — probably!!!

anyway, please consider picking up a copy from Bookshop dot org or your local independent bookseller bookshop.org/p/books/lurking-h

Bix 🫥

@jomc Perhaps it’s going to take them that long to generate their shitty POD copies.

Darius Kazemi

whoa, The WELL set up a mastodon instance?

that's wild.

happy to have The WELL in the fediverse!

Darius Kazemi

@djsundog hehehe I also had this thought 10 seconds ago

Well, this week I finally pulled the trigger and announced it: #DOWNCRAWL 2E IS COMING!! I'm so excited to share more about this reworked and expanded version of my #TTRPG about building and exploring a weird, wondrous underworld together. Find out how you can follow along: buff.ly/3wymcuz

My paraphrase of the below article: "LLM-generated content tweaked by humans is a good data source for LLMs. By 'good' we mean 'not as good as human-generated data but it's cheaper and probably good enough'. We're running a damn business here, what do you expect us to do, feed them the best possible data? Lol. Lmao."

If you're an "ML is consciousness" type person, this is treating your AIs like factory farmed livestock, feeding them their own waste product to save money

Ah, the growth of the AI equivalent of the human centipede continues apace!

@darius mad computer's disease is on it's way, then.

The core here is:

- I am accepting work
- If you are doing open source stuff, a hobby project, etc. I'm $25/hour.
- If you're a tech company, I'm $125/hour.
- If you're a small business, etc, I'm in between those two numbers, but closer to the hobby number.
- I can do lots of weird computer bullshit, and I can contract out to people I already work with and trust for the small number of things I can't do myself.
- Initial discussions are free, and I'll quote the whole project up front.
- I'd rather do weird BS for individuals than corporate stuff for corporations.

@ajroach42 How's your C++, technical writing, and general electronics knowledge?

Does ngscopeclient.org/ seem like something you'd be a good fit for? I have a long list of wishlist items I'm too busy to work on and will gladly throw some budget at someone willing to spend time on it.

Andrew (bookseller era)

I can do the kinds of freelance computer work you normally hire a freelancer for (website, ecommerce, simple apps for Android or Roku or whatever, hosting for peertube or mastodon, etc.) but that's not my specialty.

My specialty is weird, impractical bullshit like building a mobile livestreaming rig centered around a camera manufactured in 1969 (this is not a hypothetical communitymedia.video/w/t1k2ew6 ), or launching an independent television network (newellijay.tv), or building an alternate reality game as a progressive web app on a whim (it's a work in progress, and Sundog is doing all the hard work, but it's the *kind of thing* I do.)

I'm working on a little portfolio site to make it easier for people to know that I am accepting freelance work.

It's a work in progress right now.

I am accepting productive feedback, if you have any.

This will be the home of my soon to be returning Impractical Computing zine.

It will also be the home of the Impractical Computing web series, if I ever make that.

In the meantime, it's a great way to see a showcase of the kinds of projects that I've worked on in the recent past, and to get an idea of the kind of work I'm willing to do.

DELETED

@ajroach42 If you're actively looking work on the corporate side of things, more about that on the Work page would help. Or alternately, build out the last sentence in the first paragraph on the "About Me" page. Even if it's just a single line or (ugh, I know) forward to a LinkedIn profile or equivalent.

To my reading, either would help in terms of establishing scope past "I've done large-scale things and know what I'm doing." That part is clear, the "ok, but in what forest" part, less so.

I regret to inform you that the genders have been compromised.

@darius does it mean you have to change your gender?

Mark Gardner

@darius @jmac Good thing I use multi-factor genderfication

techghoul

@darius luckily you get a year of free gender affirmation to monitor the situation

I just witnessed some software transcribe "Fediverse" as "Feddy bears" which.. do I need to start a new server??

Three plus or minus five

@darius Social media site for women to go to in the woods so they’re safer than on a men’s site.

Bryan Wright

@darius
I think that's the proper term of address for everyone in the fediverse:

"Good morning, feddy bears!"
