The argument isn't that ads aren't needed, but that those ads don't need to track us. If I search for cat toys, show me cat toy ads. If I visit a car insurance comparison site, show me stuff to do with cars. I didn't need ads for stuff I looked at last month that tracking suggests I want. 12
