Corporations: we’re fucking psychopaths
Folks: can you please be kinder?
Corporations: which part of “we’re fucking psychopaths” did you not understand exactly?
Corporations: we’re fucking psychopaths Folks: can you please be kinder? Corporations: which part of “we’re fucking psychopaths” did you not understand exactly? So, challenge to the #gnome #gtk #vala wizards out there: is this the best we can do to count Unicode glyphs in a string (equivalent of string.characters.count in Swift) or is there a more performant way I don’t know about? (It’s fast enough for my needs but not ideal by any means.) https://ar.al/2021/10/31/how-to-count-unicode-glyphs-in-vala-using-gtk/ @aral Unrelated to the technical point but more a statement of where we are with respect to representing our languages using computers. It's endless screaming all the way down! I was laughing as I read your post because yesterday I had read this: "Furthermore, we would like to suggest that counting or otherwise iterating over Unicode code points should not be seen as a particularly important task in text processing scenarios." And I thought… well… maybe one day? 😆 Dear fellow European software engineers, Don’t. Just don’t. How much can they pay you to better enslave humanity by helping them improve their panopticon? No amount is worth having to live with this complicity. “A major French report released Tuesday found that an estimated 330,000 children were victims of sex abuse within France’s Catholic Church over the past 70 years, in France's first major reckoning with the devastating phenomenon.“ https://inkl.com/a/kPnWxZtjBoj The difference between the Catholic Church and a pedophile ring is that you’re not told to respect pedophile rings and they’re not allowed to run schools. “Imagine having more money than anybody has ever had at any time in history, and instead of addressing world hunger, you strive to become the human equivalent of an everlasting gobstopper.” @aral That's what differentiates Free software from Open-Source software. Even if we speak about ultimately the same set of software (which we often do). “…the climate crisis represents the ‘biggest market failure of all time.’” https://inkl.com/a/LZlXzaczwkz Really? And there I thought it was the market working exactly as designed. Maybe the real problem is shackling our future to a psychopathic model based on a zero-sum game of ruthless, shortsighted greed. Just ran the same WebSocket load tests with #SiteJS on a 2 vCPU VPS with 2GB RAM and it started dropping messages (1 message/sec) at around 10K concurrent connections. I’m more than happy with that as a starting point. (That’s not what we need to optimise. For context, I have 7.24K followers on the fediverse after 3 years. We won’t start hitting those limits on the #SmallWeb for a while.) ;) Videos, etc., at: https://twitter.com/aral/status/1345734023658745866 Note: I posted those videos on Twitter as my Mastodon personal instance didn’t let me post them as they were too large (my instance of one is hosted on @mastohost and they have limits – which is understandable; they’re not a multi-billion-dollar company). For longer videos, etc., I use our Vimeo account. @Gargron Do you know who has the most followers on the fediverse? Does anyone have more than you? (Doing some load tests for the small web stuff I’m working on and would be good to know what the current limits are in practice on the nearest thing that exists.) :) Just learned about “preliminary tax payment” in Ireland – which means that you pay next years’ taxes in advance (yes, you read that right, so we’re going to be paying twice the tax we owe this year). PS. Only for people like us who pay taxes (Jeff, you can breathe easy, my man). How fucking clueless is @Mozilla? Let’s give Zoom 5 out of 5 stars for security* clueless. https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/products/zoom/ * In a so-called “privacy” rating. “…they've been subsidised into market dominance … You have insanely large pools of capital creating an incredibly inefficient money-losing business model.” The Silicon Valley model in a nutshell. The countdown is on! Less than 24 hours to go for my opening keynote at Özgürkon, organised by the Turkish Free Software Foundation. Eek, so much to do today :) Live stream: https://live.ozgurkon.org/ Listening to BBC World Service to see if my interview about contact tracing apps will be broadcast now: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/live:bbc_world_service Apple just killed Offline Web Apps while purporting to protect your privacy: why that’s A Bad Thing and why you should care Just heard that a documentary on surveillance and privacy that a friend of mine has been working for five years is finally complete. Just skimmed it and it looks great. And damn do I look younger in it. Can’t wait to share it with you once it’s released :) Warning: if you haven’t updated Pop!_OS 19.04 to 19.10 yet, wait until this bug fix lands before you do: https://github.com/pop-os/upgrade/pull/82 I’m currently running some sort of half-broken Frankenstein 19.04/19.10/half-Pop!_OS/half-Ubuntu hybrid.
