@mcc I had a tiny linux machine that had a kernel module ('mod-ledtrig-morse', I think) that you could send Morse messages to any of the system LEDs @nev I assume that's just the GRUB equivalent of those "look it up in the manual" motherboard diagnostic beeps @nev that is absolutely wild some of the stuff hidden in docs and manpages is mindboggling @nev morse is used in a whole bunch of accessibility situations. I've known a couple of computers that beep/flash boot errors in Morse @scruss I can see the usefulness, and there are other sound output options available for various grub things according to the manual! But just fucking imagine you're starting up a computer and it starts beeping at you in Morse code and you're like "is that fucking Morse code?!" and need to scribble down the little dots and dashes to figure out how to boot into recovery mode lol @nev I did that with my old Nokia a million years ago, it would beep incoming text messages as morse so I wouldn't have to look at the phone! @nev there is absolutely some set of geeks (the old grey amateur radio people) that gatekeep their part of the tech hobby by ability to receive morse... |
@nev I *sighs, takes deep breath* I've been in circumstances where that would help. Although I'm disappointed it can't do morse code by blinking the LED in the "i" on the "ThinkPad' logo on the back of the case.
