What's your favorite #apple variety?

if you want to hear about apple innovation and disruption, check out this article about the launch of Cosmic Crisp aka WA-38 https://story.californiasunday.com/cosmic-crisp-apple-launch/ also I would keep my eye on the WA-64; here is the 2023 fact sheet published by its developers @skyfaller that's one of the last steps in the process! Cosmic Crisp was in development for 20 years and was named toward the end of the process @darius Damn, that's a long time to build hype for WA-64. Something to look forward to, at least. @mhoye I think it's better though not radically! however it is also easier to grow which is a big deal @darius Big fan of a McIntosh here and just about any of the russets and pippins I've had from Vermont. Some of them are weird but all of them are delightful for the difference! @darius I'm rather partial to Gravenstein, but part of that is because it makes great cider, and I have 2 batches from fresh-crushing fermenting now. @jerrysv I have a gravenstein in my yard - most of them went bad because they all ripen the same week and I was traveling :( But I agree I think they are delicious @darius hopefully, with the addition of fresh cashmere hops while fermenting, part of the batch will be even better than normal. last year was not a good year for the tree, this year has bounced back nicely. @jerrysv apparently the gravenstein is more or less biennial: it often, but not always, bears fruit every other year. Which made me a lot better about my tree. @darius huh interesting, thanks for sharing! I knew about its pollination issues, though. @darius I don’t know what my favourite apple variety is! I would definitely attend an apple tasting, where I’m given a plate with apple slices and something to cleanse my palette before moving on to each one. Maybe it’d need to be a random selection of all the types of apples, because of how many of them there are. Otherwise it could be a full-day event. Hopefully I’d be offered the opportunity to take some apples home with me afterwards. #Apple @darius there’s a russet apple we get here in October that’s my favourite. can be hard to find though. Otherwise Empire. @darius Maybe I'm biased towards my alma mater but I'm a big fan of the University of Minnesota Apple program.
[DATA EXPUNGED]
@darius Valkea kuulas (apparently "White transparent" in English), and Punainen kaneli (no idea what that would be - "Red cinnamon" perhaps - but it's an old one originating from Russia) @darius I'm also team Pink Lady for supermarket apples, but I'm also quite fond of the ones off my Anna tree in the back yard. @darius I don't know the variety, but these left out by a generous neighbour with an apple tree are nice! @darius Granny Smith all the way. Give me that sour. Basically what I want is an apple-flavored lemon. @darius In roughly decreasing order: @darius Probably Cox Orange (= Cox's Orange Pippin). But there are sooo many varieties. See e.g. this list of apple trees available from a single nursery in Denmark: @darius My favorites are "Golden Delicious" (for many years) and recently I found "Crimson snow" which I really like. @darius Not listed there, but. Kaneliomena ("cinnamon apple"): https://peda.net/hankkeet/geenivaraoppi/yl%C3%A4koulu/biologia_ylakoulu/ljll/omena-luonnos/ll/kl @darius me, running into the room breathless three days later: I LOVE SWEETANGO |
me, personally, I love a Pink Lady but I recognize that Cosmic Crisp is probably the most exciting variety to be made available for general sale in the last 5 years
