Anyway. I thought I could get working photoshop on M1 by running an ancient version in MacOS 9 in an emulator. It mostly does work, but the text tool refuses to acknowledge the existence of Cyrillic and types gibberish instead.

Text encoding was still an unsolved problem back in the year 2000.

The interesting part however is how much of the UI in this 22-year-old version of photoshop is unchanged compared to the current one.

Yes, this came out when the little me was just starting school, yet I instantly know my way around this UI.

Out of things I tried so far that do run natively on the M1:
- Pixelmator Pro does work for most of what I want, but I can't do cmd+shift+c to "copy merged" and paste it in telegram or whatever
- Affinity Photo can't free transform the selected part of a layer, only an entire layer, trips me up a lot
- Gimp just works way too differently

and that was just me trying to make a meme
