@mcc real frustrating to hear people miss the main point. In the context of a school district, they've bought into GSuite, they need hardware that can be MDMed through GSuite, Google decided they're fine with forcing them to buy new hardware. Nothing about the hardware has changed enough to warrant this, they just want the money. Being flashable to open firmware is insurance against regulation; school districts can't do it because there's no MDM and the whole point is MDM!

@moralrecordings @mcc Of course the school switching software would be an expensive hassle. But it could be much less so than buying new hardware every 3-6 years.

@be @mcc The proposition is a lot more expensive now MDM and per-device licensing is tied to the groupware provider you use. You're going to struggle to switch to Microsoft 365 if you're already paying for GSuite and have a stack of hardware too slow for Windows. No MDM at all is a maintenance and legal headache which requires a lot more staff.

@moralrecordings @mcc Why do you assume the only alternative is Microsoft 365?

@be don't know where you got that from, all I said was switching is generally more expensive
