The site has been such a uniquely big part of my life, for almost that entire stretch, that i find myself sort of overwhelmed with a complicated mix of feelings when the big day rolls around, but the ultimate throughline there is that I'm grateful for it and for all the people it's brought into my life, and glad as fuck that it's plowing on into the future, year by year and day by day. There's no where else quite like it, and we need more places like it on the internet.

@joshmillard
I still remember my first comment, and getting ripped apart by quonsar who did not approve of my presence. That was about 20 years ago.

Now like Jessamyn I'm working in a library in Vermont.

@joshmillard Without Metafilter there would have been no room for my "coup" joke.

@joshmillard I feel a little bittersweet at the anniversary. It happens to line up with me realizing I need to leave the site for my own wellbeing, at least for a while. I've had to take short breaks before, but this time feels different; I'm certainly not the first to have this experience, nor will I be the last. It's been my home on the Internet for at least a decade, even before I paid my $5, and I already miss spending time there.

But I remain optimistic that MetaFilter will trundling along, and I hope that in some months or years both I and it will be in a better place for me to return. It's a special place, and I agree completely: we need more places like it on the Internet.
