@mcc it took me like 2 weeks to enable federation on my one-man social media project, so either the facebook programmers aren't very good (not likely), or the company hasn't yet figured out how to hack activitypub for profit yet (very likely). @mcc in fact it's quite possible the suits at facebook thought activitypub was somewhat easy to game, & are only finding out now that actually, the protocol is too inherently platform-agnostic for that. & now for all we know they're scrambling to either “extend” the protocol (à la web 2.0) or adopt another one (bluesky?), or just make their own which they'll try to market to the fediverse as a “better” alternative to activitypub. @mcc but that implies it'll actually eventually get done (many years from now) @benjistokman The world's largest corporation announced through an unsigned comment on their blog that they are considering forming a task force to investigate the possibility of forming a team to create a prototype for adding support for the fediverse @benjistokman Sorry, the joke here is that *all three* of Threads, Bluesky, and Tumblr have vaguely claimed that federation is coming, but nobody seems reliably committed to anything at all. None of these are federated or will be this week. @benjistokman@mast.benstokman.me @mcc@mastodon.social I would like to announce ActivityPub support will be coming to my butt in six months. Yea what happened to Tumblr anyway? I'm guessing no official statement or anything but there's no gossip from inside about where priorities actually are? @mcc @benjistokman So it does seem like Threads federation won't happen this week because I assume we would have heard of it in advance as Meta does not work like Elon Musk's Twitter where every change is only known about the moment it is done but are we sure they aren't planning to federate pretty quick? It would make sense from their POV since they want it to help adoption and they did go through the trouble of having secret meetings with fediverse admins. |
@mcc "We federate with a server in Canada, you've probably never heard of it."
